Felony charged: A woman is facing charges after she allegedly tried to flee Wal-Mart without paying for nearly $2,500 in merchandise, Monday. Police said Demetria Yost 46, no fixed address, was charged with felony theft and contempt of court. They reported they spotted a woman matching the suspect’s description running toward the back of the mall and took Yost into custody. Police report 128 items were recovered, including pens, earrings, jewelry and a pair of side cutters allegedly found in her purse.

Charged: A city resident is facing charges after he allegedly fled Wal-Mart without paying for a shopping cart full of merchandise, Sunday. Police charged David Green, 46, 155 Wildon Ave., with misdemeanor theft. Employees allege Green fled the store through the garden side doors and appeared to leave the parking lot when he saw them watching but “returned moments later only to park his vehicle in a different location” and re-enter the store. Police said Green told them he’d “acted foolishly” and seemed remorseful. Roughly $240 in merchandise was located in Green’s car, police said.

Stocking up: A man filled a book bag full of merchandise at Wal-Mart and tried to leave without paying for the merchandise, Monday. An off-duty Harrison County sheriff’s deputy stopped the man in the parking lot and “was able to retrieve the stolen merchandise and restore it” to the store before the man fled in a silver Jeep Liberty. Police said the thief stole 14 items valued at $433.

Made a run: A couple fled Wal-Mart in a red SUV when they tried to leave the store with merchandise they hadn’t paid for, Monday. Employees said the two were changing price tags on items and bagged other items they hadn’t paid for.

Bad spot: A motorist whose car ended up “stuck in the hillside” at St. Charles Drive and Johnson Road said his brakes stopped working, Monday. He was not injured.

Surprise visitor: A man in the 2300 block of Chestnut Street said his ex showed up at his home upset because he has a new girlfriend, Monday. He said she was “pounding on the door” but left before police got there. He asked police to stay and make sure his new girlfriend got to her car safely.

Hasty departure: A woman in the 500 block of South Fourth Street wanted someone removed from her home but he was already leaving as police arrived and the female “would not open the door to steak with (police),” Monday.

Lurking: A suspicious male was reported in the 3500 block of Chestnut Street, Monday. Police were shown Ring camera footage of the man, wearing a white shirt and black shorts, “lingering” around the residence, but when they searched the area there was no sign of him.

Reported: A Toronto woman said someone at a location in the 400 block of North Fifth Street stole her iPhone 15, Monday.

Booked: Jerry Crossland II, 31, 1432 Oak Grove Ave., Steubenville, warrant for failure to appear (Municipal Court), Monday. Crossland also was cited for driving under suspension.

Served: Jason Jones, 30, 1306 Arlington Ave., Steubenville, failure to appear, Monday.

Code issues: Notices of violation were sent to the owner/occupant of properties at 2420 Sunset Blvd., high grass/weeds.

Jefferson County Sheriff

Scary call: A Smithfield resident said her neighbor had called to warn her two men “just tried breaking into her house,” Sunday. The neighbor said the men had just been at her back door with flashlights “and were now at her side door trying to get in,” she said. The homeowner said her grandson went outside and scared them off.

Upheaval: A caller reported a woman “arguing and fighting” with people at a residence on township Road 152, Toronto, Sunday. The caller said they’d asked the woman to leave several times but she refused, and deputies said they could hear her in the background yelling. The woman had “hit her husband with a brush and would not stop (arguing) with him,” the caller said, and told deputies the last time they’d dealt with the woman they had to use a taser on her. The woman told deputies they were fighting because her husband “is always accusing her of hacking his e-mails and going through his phone” and said she “would rather go to jail than stay with (him).”

Shadowed: A Tiltonsville resident reported he saw a shadow and believed someone was in his house, Sunday. Deputies said he later advised they weren’t needed anymore because he reportedly “saw his own shadow.”

Complained: A Cross Creek (Steubenville) resident said her neighbors “are making that loud noise again,” Saturday. She told deputies they’re “always playing loud music,” but when deputies checked the area, they said they didn’t hear anything.

Pulled in: A woman in Mingo Junction told deputies she thought someone was in her basement, Friday. She said she saw car lights pull into the garage but didn’t recognize the vehicle “and nobody with a vehicle she knew was supposed to be at the residence.” She said when she heard the car doors shut, she took the kids who were at the house with her into a room with a door that locked. She said her father got to the residence first and checked but the vehicle was no longer in the garage and no one was in the basement. The woman and her father said nothing appeared to be missing.

Cutting up: A Toronto area resident said a man was “on his property again, cutting down trees,” Saturday. He told deputies there was already a warrant for the man’s arrest for a previous incident.

Lock out: A woman reported the lock on her storage unit had been chiseled off and taken, Friday. She said she didn’t think anything was taken, but she’d noticed the unit next to hers had also been tampered with but not removed.

Fraud: A Mingo Junction man told deputies someone hacked his Amazon account and placed an order for just under $722, Friday.

Theft: A Tiltonsville woman said her father stole her motorcycle and jewelry, Saturday.

Fraud: A Dillonvale man said he lost his wallet at a St. Clairsville gas station, and he’d noticed fraudulent charges on it from locations in Ohio and West Virginia, Friday. He said Belmont County authorities to file the report in Jefferson County because it’s where he lives.
