Jefferson County Sheriff

Animal kingdom: A Jefferson County woman asked for help getting her son out of her home, Sunday. She said he got “belligerent” after she asked him to get a live chicken out of her house. Deputies said things calmed down and they were able to leave.

Suspicious minds: A county resident reported her son and his girlfriend dined at a family member’s home and reported the food tasted “weird,” Sunday. They brought a plate of food to her home that her husband ate after which he also reported “it did taste weird and now he also doesn’t feel right.” All admitted they had no proof that anything they’d ingested was poisoned.

Bait and switch: A Bloomingdale woman reported a man standing across the street from her home, yelling at it, Sunday. She called 9-1-1 twice, the first time asking for the sheriff and hanging up though the second time she did given them some additional information. Deputies located the man, who told them he’d argued with the couple across the street and they’d asked him to leave so he did. He said it never escalated beyond an argument. Deputies said they saw the woman walking around inside her house but she refused to come to the door.

Rift: Deputies were advised a couple was fighting in the 1400 block of Main Street, Smithfield, Sunday. Police said bystanders reported the female took off with “a toddler in the back (seat) and the door hanging open” and the male was throwing things at the car. They said the female was upset and complained the male “would not (let) her leave” while he told them he tried to stop her because of the vehicle’s exhaust. When deputies spoke with the woman by phone she said she’d gone to another state and “didn’t plan to return anytime soon.”

Causing problems: A Bloomingdale woman reported someone in a “big, red pickup truck” turned around in her yard and damaged it, Sunday. She told deputies she couldn’t say it was intentional but believed the driver was a member of the sportsmen club harassing her because she’s complained about previous incidents of people trespassing and damaging her property.

Alcohol infused: A Mingo Junction resident reported his girlfriend was “extremely intoxicated” and when he asked her to leave, “she became irate and started breaking things,” Sunday. He said she tends to get violent when she drinks liquor and they’d been out in Weirton earlier but only had beer so he “didn’t think anything would happen” and all seemed fine when they got home. He claimed he was getting ready for bed when she started arguing with him and when he finally told her she needed to leave she slammed the back door as she left, then threw a broom at one of his cars and his lunch box at the other. Neither were damaged so he told deputies he’s not interested in pursuing charges, but he doesn’t want her to return. She told deputies he “asked her to leave and then pushed her outside.” She said she left her wallet in the now ex-boyfriend’s house and wanted it back but deputies looked for it and were unable to locate it.

Tall tales: An anonymous caller told deputies he was on the phone with a female when he heard her boyfriend arguing with her and then took the phone from her, asking the caller “who are you,” Sunday. Deputies spoke with the male and female said to be in distress and were told the male had just returned home from work and they had not been arguing. Deputies said neither of them showed signs of being in a scuffle, nor did they appear upset with each other.

Complaining: A Wintersville man complained water runoff from his neighbor’s residence is damaging his yard and fence, Saturday. He also complained the neighbor had “tore up his front yard,” but deputies determined it was a corner of his yard caused by the neighbor pulling in and out of his driveway. They told him it’s a civil issue.

Troubling: An Adena resident reported seeing man within eyeshot on a neighbor’s farm despite a protection order he has against him, April 18. Deputies said a male and female were on the property getting horses but they weren’t close enough to verify their identity. The complainant said the property belonged to a relative and wasn’t sure if the man he’s had problems with had permission to be there, but deputies tracked down family members who said they’d told the man he could go on the farm.

Adrift: Deputies were notified a woman with a tackle box was crying along County Road 7, Saline township, Tuesday. They said the woman told them she was homeless and had been living in a tent with two other people but they’d left and she was alone. She said she’d filed a missing persons report on one of the men who’d walked away several days earlier after telling her he was going to go to Toronto Police and ask for help because “they’re homeless and (he) would see her (in a couple months) when he has a job,” and when she returned from the hospital she discovered the other man had left while she was away. She said that man has mental health issues. Deputies said the man she’d reported as missing was located in another community and were told he “just wanted to get away from the other two.” Deputies said she told them the other man is autistic and schizophrenic. They were unable to locate him, though he told a family member by phone “he was upset he was homeless.” Deputies were able to place the woman in a shelter, though she had to surrender her cat before they would let her in.

Blackout: Someone reported seeing a man laying on the sidewalk who appeared to be unconscious in Yorkville, Sunday. Deputies said it turned out to be a woman who told them she “doesn’t remember why she passed out.”
