Gun fired: A Wintersville man ended up in police custody after he allegedly fired multiple shots at his ex-girlfriend’s residence in the 500 block of South Fifth Street, Saturday. Police said Akerelhotep R. Hartley, 21, 520 Canton Road, was charged with discharging a firearm at or into a habitation. Police said no one was injured and Hartley wasn’t present when they arrived at the location, but report he was found the following day in the basement of a property in the 1000 block of McNeal Avenue. The owner reported seeing a light on and hearing people talking inside the residence, but when police found a juvenile that the owner recognized he told them there was no need to continue the search. Police were called back to the location a little later after a man was found in the basement. They said the man gave them “partial information” about his identity and realized he was a person of interest in the shooting incident. Hartley is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Wednesday.

What could go wrong?: A Heritage Place resident allegedly tried to heat an apartment “with a car battery and a kerosene heater,” Tuesday. The caller was concerned about “potential safety hazards,” police said. When police arrived, the caller told them the resident had removed the items from the building.

Bad influence: Employees at Kroger had told police a female and two children fled the store on foot with merchandise that hadn’t been paid for. Police didn’t immediately locate the female but did catch up to the kids, who told them their aunt had stolen merchandise and when employees confronted her, “told them to run.” They denied taking anything that didn’t belong to them and said they told her not to steal. Police told their mother the video would be reviewed to determine if her kids were involved.

Fire hazard: Police reported hearing an alarm at Heritage Place apartments and discovered smoke in a hallway, Wednesday. They immediately called for city firefighters and notified residents of the issue, which turned out to be a plastic children’s toy that had been left on a stovetop that was turned on. Police said the apartment appears to be vacant and they believed someone “may be squatting there.” The stove was turned off.

Tired out: Vandals slashed tires on eight vehicles at Nick’s Auto Sales on Sunset Boulevard, Tuesday. Police said all eight vehicles were parked near the city’s sidewalk and noted some had one or two tires damaged, while on others three or four had been punctured.

Accosted: A delivery driver said a man pulled a knife on him and ran in the 100 block of South Fourth Street, Wednesday. He said the man walked up to him “screaming for help,” and when he turned around pulled the knife on him. The driver said when he told the man to get away, he “dropped the knife and ran.”

Ding, dong, ditching: Union Avenue residents told police juveniles were ringing doorbells and running off, Tuesday. The homeowner had video of the kids at the door and recognized two of them, but when police spoke with their parents they insisted their children hadn’t left the house.

Shooting arrows: The owner of a property in the 2500 block of Chestnut Street said he found an arrow stuck in the siding, Thursday. He said it looked like someone had shot it in the air and it hit his house and told police he figured it was an accident.

Keep them tied: A city resident said an individual who was cited for dog at large after he complained was not happy, Wednesday. He said the neighbor voiced his displeasure and told police he’d seen the dogs loose on at least four more occasions but didn’t call.
