Burning bridges: Police spotted a couple going into the bathroom at Murphy’sFfield after hours, Sunday. They said he was standing in the doorway as they approached and when he saw them, “moved quickly into the bathroom, trying to (hide.)” Police followed him into the building and found the man and his female companion sharing a stall and said he told them “they were using the restroom,” but officers pointed out the park closes at dark. Later, police were told the same man was refusing to leave a residence. He told them he wanted to get his work clothes and then he would leave. His significant other said she did not want him there, so police waited until he left the area.

Long walk: Police said a woman sitting on the side of state Route 7 told them all was well, Sunday. She said she was walking to Wheeling, so an officer gave her a ride to Mingo Junction because Route 7 is closed to walking traffic.

Problem caller: A man reported a group of juveniles loitering near a vehicle (and) throwing trash in a parking lot in the 100 block of McConnell Avenue, Sunday. Police found four teenage girls, two of who live across from the parking lot, “sitting on the curb conversing and playing with their cell phones.” Police said there was no trash on the ground or near them and said the teens were not breaking any laws or being loud, contrary to what the caller had reported. They located the caller, which wasn’t easy because he’d given a fictitious address, and said he told them “He didn’t call but did and inferred that he was trying to be secretive to avoid retaliation.” They pointed out that the girls he repeatedly complains about “are never found to be committing any crimes and there is never any trash in the parking lot,” but he continued to make wild accusations. Police told him there are no violations occurring and he needs to “only call police for what is actually happening.” They noted they’d been called to the parking lot “for this same complaint several times in the past few weeks with no violations observed.”

Not me: Michael D. Popp, 46, no fixed address, probation violation (Toronto county court), Sunday. Police spotted Popp walking in the 600 block of Lincoln Avenue and, realizing there was a warrant for his arrest, pulled up alongside him but when the officer addressed him by name said Popp “advised that (he) had him confused with another male.” When the officer told him he knew exactly who he was he said Popp said “ohhh” followed by an expletive, then took off running toward the wood line. Police said Popp jumped over a chain link fence and began running up the hill toward Garrett Avenue, and when the officer tried to intercept him on foot on Garrett he headed toward Beatty Park. Police found him hiding under a pile of overgrown weeds there.

Raising cain: A disturbance was reported in the area of Oregon Avenue and Granard Parkway East, Sunday. Police spoke with a resident who told them “nothing had taken place and he was home alone.” Police said he “seemed” to be under the influence but was inside his home.

Hit-skip: A Lawson Avenue resident said he had his car door open when a maroon Ford truck drove by, striking his door and leaving the scene, Sunday.

Booked: Travis R. Taylor, 48, 210 Madison Ave., Mingo Junction, bench warrant out of Steubenville Municipal Court, Sunday.

Jefferson County Sheriff

Shadow boxing: A caller reported a man “walking in and out of traffic, throwing punches at imaginary people” on state Route 164, Amsterdam, Saturday. The caller didn’t know the man’s name but said he should be easy to spot because he was “wearing a hat with a large bird’s feather sticking out.” Deputies said the man had an outstanding warrant but, because the jail was at capacity, it couldn’t be served and said he was a vagrant who was passing through the area when he met a man living on state Route 164 and moved in with him. Both men “admit to being regular meth users, which may have caused the shadow boxing incident,” deputies said.

After hours: A caller reported two people were still in Jefferson Lake State Park after midnight, Saturday. Deputies said the two “were playing with Tarot cards” and said they weren’t aware the park had closed.

Cited: Deputies report when they were able to stop a driver for multiple defective equipment violations he was “irate and screaming profanities,” Sunday. They said he was warned multiple times to calm down and refused, and ended up being cited for driving while his license was suspended. He also was warned for reckless diving, defective equipment, a loud exhaust and disorderly conduct, deputies said.

Hearing things: Someone complained about loud music coming from a Bloomingdale residence, but when deputies responded they report “the music was not loud and could be heard faintly from the road,” Saturday.

Frustrated: A Toronto area woman said her grandchild was “acting out of control, throwing rocks at her,” Friday. The 9-year-old told deputies he was “unhappy with grandma yelling at him.”

Booked: Robert Godman, 707 Market St., Steubenville, warrant for violating a protection order, Sunday.

Cited: Matthew B. Peckins, 86 Pioneer Drive, Wintersville, driving under suspension and improper registration.
