Big bang theory: A Yorkville man researching a device his girlfriend had inherited from a family member said he was concerned it was a grenade, Tuesday. He said her uncle gave it to her and told her it was a fake, but he'd done some research and discovered if it was fake it should have a blue marking on top. He said he put it in an ammo box with plastic bags to cushion it and put it outside the house. Deputies believed it was a World War II frag grenade and conferred with the Youngstown Bomb Squad before securing it in a metal container designed to handle explosives and transported it to the Jefferson County Justice Center, where the bomb squad eventually took possession of it. Initial tests were inconclusive, and deputies said the bomb squad planned to "open it up (Wednesday) to find out for sure" if it was real.
Safety first: Joseph D. Booth, 8889 state Route 43, Bloomingdale, was cited failure to stop for a traffic control device and failure to reinstate his license. Deputies said Booth was pulled over after he allegedly drove past a flagger in front of Edison High School without stopping. The school was conducting an active shooter drill and had set up a safety zone with school staff serving as flaggers while students got off their buses, deputies said.
Attention getter: Steven D. Kirkpatrick, 41, 28 township Road 281, Lot 53, Steubenville, two warrants out of Carroll County and a third out of Jefferson County, Monday. Deputies located Kirkpatrick after a caller reported he was banging on the door of an Irondale residence where he wasn't supposed to be. They said he left before officers arrived but was located at a Pioneer Street residence and tried to flee on foot but was cornered by the deputy and a Saline Township Police Chief Cliff Utt. Kirkpatrick was booked into the county jail on a charge of criminal damaging/failure to appear, deputies said.
Light fingered: A Dillonvale man told village officials he put $160 in cash into the village's payment drop box but the money hadn't been credited to his account, Monday. Township officials said they immediately checked camera footage and discovered it had been stolen and identified the woman they believe took the payment out of the box.
Bits and pieces: A teenager told deputies her uncle had hit her multiple times while she was in the backseat of her grandmother's vehicle, Tuesday. She said they'd been joking around while they drove but "he took some of the jokes seriously" and reacted, causing her to jump out of the car. Her grandmother told deputies it was "just a family dispute because the juvenile became very disrespectful and started hitting her uncle in the back of his head, and when he turned around to try to calm the situation it became a verbal back-and-forth and the juvenile jumped out of the car." When they spoke to the uncle he confirmed her account, telling deputies the juvenile had been disrespectful and hit him in the back of the head. No one wanted to pursue charges and all involved agreed to separate.

Got your goat: A caller reported a goat loose on state Route 7 at Franklin Avenue, Monday. The Jefferson County Humane Officer was already on scene, walking the goat to a Ross Street location, but an officer loaded the goat into his cruiser and gave it a ride home. Neighbors told them the goat's owners were out of town and secured it in their back yard.
Bit the dust: A Foster Place resident stated she was arguing with her child's father when he "walked up to her and put her in a chokehold," Tuesday. She said she bit his arm to get him to let her go and he fled when he saw her calling police. Police said she had redness and what appeared to be a brush burn on her neck and told them she wants to file charges.
Noisy: Someone reported hearing a woman yelling in the woods in the vicinity of Capitol Avenue, Tuesday. Police located the woman, who "advised everything was OK and ... she was only arguing with her family on the phone."
Heard: Police reported hearing two shots fired in the Pleasant Heights area, Wednesday. A caller also reported hearing them. Police said they checked the area but didn't find anything.
Cited: Police cited a youthful driver after allegedly watching him make an illegal left turn from Bryden Road onto Sunset Boulevard, Tuesday. Santonio R. Brown, 18, 232 Bryden Road, was cited for the stop sign violation and having no operator's license. Brown allegedly told police he's never had a driver's license.
Shadowy figure: A man told police he was walking in the 700 block of North Seventh Street when he spotted a man following him, Wednesday. He couldn't give police a description, but they gave him a ride to his South Sixth Street home.
Creepy: A city resident said a charcoal-colored sedan carrying four individuals wearing masks followed her daughter home, Tuesday. As the car passed, she said one of them "points a firearm at her" and that the vehicle traveled the wrong way on Sherman Avenue.
Grab 'n go: A Hillary Square resident said he dropped his wallet while he was climbing in his front window and his wife ran up and snatched it before fleeing into the woods, Tuesday. He said it only had some papers in it. No explanation was given as to why he was climbing in his own window.
Kids in trouble: Police took juveniles throwing rocks at cars on Lincoln Avenue at the overpass into custody, Tuesday. They were taken to the police station and their parents called. The kids were charged with criminal mischief.
Bad move: A city resident pulled over for speeding of the Adams Street ramp onto Washington Street ended up in police custody after police discovered he was wanted in Columbiana County on a felony warrant, Tuesday. Markell Albritton, 30, 1509 Foster Place, Steubenville, was held in the Jefferson County Jail until Columbiana County authorities picked him up. He also was ticketed for speeding.
