Hasty retreat: The driver of a school van said she had six kids with her delivering plastic yard eggs for a fundraiser when they saw a man in the 3200 block of Homewood Drive approaching with a "black shotgun," Sunday. She said the van is "clearly marked with the school's name on the side" and she had the interior lights on while she waited for the kids but when they told her about the man she "quickly" left the area with them. Police located the man, who said it was a BB gun. He told them he saw a white van parked in his neighbor's driveway and saw "numerous individuals walking around his neighbor's house" and was concerned they were robbing the house.

Most troublesome: A man pretending to be someone else asked deputies to check on a child, claiming she was his granddaughter and that she'd been taken from his house while he was sleeping, Thursday. The caller told deputies he'd obtained emergency custody of the child and needed the toddler back because people there were doing drugs and several of them had warrants," insisting conditions inside the home were deplorable and claiming he was standing outside the house when a male came out, brandishing a weapon. The caller told deputies he was heading back to the property but never did, so deputies located the 19-year-old man whose name and information the caller used who confirmed he had no grandchild and said it was most likely his father "trying to get people in trouble and using his names" because his father has warrants for his arrest. When they went to the child's location the mother told them the older man had been at her residence "a little bit ago, trying to get in and yelling he wanted the baby." She said she had dated him at one time but he was not the baby's father, "which is the reason they are not together." She said he appeared to be high but had not been able to gain entrance. She said she has sole custody of the child and deputies said there was no reason to believe the child was not safe in the residence.

Better left unsaid: The FBI requested a welfare check for an Irondale man after a Utah Xbox gamer told them he'd threatened to mail a bomb to him, Thursday. The Irondale man told deputies he'd been playing "Call of Duty" with an online gamer "he doesn't get along with." He said he'd told his friend not to invite the guy into the Xbox gaming chat room but he did anyways, and an argument ensued. He said he told the guy "He better watch out the way he talks to people online, 'One day someone might send a pipe bomb to your house'," He claimed he was just warning the guy he needed to stop being a bully, deputies noted. Deputies said he let them go through his house to "make sure he wasn't making a pipe bomb," and said they didn't find anything that remotely resembled bomb-making materials.

Sign controversy: A Bloomingdale woman complained a man was "stopping cars at a stop sign on their road ... and threatening to issue citations to those who do not stop," Thursday. She said he's never pulled anyone over, "but makes sure he stops people and tells them to slow down." The man denied pulling anyone over. He said he's parked his golf cart in his neighbor's yard while they talked and hasn't tried to stop anyone or chase anyone down, but he does want people to slow down. He told deputies he's seen "many people speeding and running the stop sign on township Road 204."

Disruption: A Yorkville man said he had an altercation with a woman at a village council meeting, Tuesday. He said he'd attended the meeting and got a chance to address council, but as he was talking she started interrupting him and "giving her opinion and (would not let him talk." He said a deputy eventually quieted her down and said as he was leaving he meeting she grabbed him by the arm and said, "What do you have against me?" He said he told her no and tried to leave but she "continued to talk about the mayor and other council happenings.'He said it's the third time she's caused problems at a village council meeting and "feels that he and other members of the village are being harassed."
