Theft: Police responding to reports of a fight at downtown hair salon were told a customer scuffled with a thief at the front desk, Wednesday. The victim, a female, told police a man known to her walked in and asked about a ride to Weirton, but no one was willing to take him. She said she was at the cash register waiting for her change when he "snatched the money from both of their hands." She said she struggled with him but he "began to assault her before fleeing the store with her money," jumping in a maroon car. Police said the woman's lower lip was swollen and her upper lip was bleeding from a deep laceration. The store manager said the suspect struck the customer with a closed fist and "threw (her) into a glass (display) case ... as well as a retail rack," knocking merchandise to the floor. She also told police the female driving the maroon getaway car "was in the store and left her money card," which she turned over to police. The thief also left a lime green Nike hooded sweatshirt behind with what "appeared to be fresh blood smears."
Pow wow: Police spotted a woman on Slack Street at South Fourth Street walking quickly behind a male, "screaming and swearing at him and causing a disturbance," Wednesday. The female said the man was "going to her residence to speak with her estranged husband regarding an on-going lovers quarrel between them as well as text messages back-and-forth" between the female and the man she was following. She said she didn't want him speaking with her husband, but police said he "eventually ... walked away" and made his way to her estranged husband's residence and said the two "had a civil conversation."
Love lost: Powell Avenue residents causing a disturbance told police they were arguing "over allegations of being unfaithful and tracking each others' day-to-day movements, Wednesday.
Potty mouth: The manager of an apartment complex in the 700 block of Market Street told police a tenant came to the office two days in a row, demanding to speak with her and was irate when advised she had previously scheduled meetings, Wednesday. She said on both occasions the tenant "began to use profanities toward (her)."
Bad break: Callers reported a disturbance "between numerous family members" in the 1500 block of Euclid Avenue, Wednesday. Police were told an adult male "was acting very belligerently" toward a female and two children "due to a recent breakup." They said he left before police arrived, but on his way out he "pushed (a child) out of the way." They didn't want to pursue charges.
Hanging around: Police were told individuals who had been evicted from a Plum Street building were squatting in their former residence, Wednesday. When they arrived, police said sleeping bags were on the floor in plain view but no one was in the apartment. There was no indication of forced entry, police said.
Funny money: An employee at a downtown business told police a man known to her paid for his purchase earlier this week with two counterfeit $20 bills, Wednesday. She said he came in again Wednesday and asked her to check another $20 bill. When she told him it, too, was counterfeit she said he left the store.
Stolen: A resident in the 500 block of North Fifth Street told police his phone was stolen from MLK Center, Wednesday. He told police he'd laid it down "and later found it gone," and said whoever took it had turned off the tracking system "and (had) used it to purchase fast food" at Wendys, but it was declined, and then again at McDonald's. He said whoever took it texted him that they were returning it but he hasn't heard from them since nor have they brought it back.
Booked: Brandon McLaughlin, 41, no fixed address, Steubenville, four counts of petit theft and probation violation, Wednesday; Kenneth R. Ware, 45, 140 Talbott Drive, Wintersville, warrant for child endangerment, Wednesday; Tami R. Harris, 41, 416 Adams St., Apt. 6, Steubenville, three warrants for petit theft and a warrant for failure to control/weaving, Wednesday.
Served: William G. Holt, 54, 201 Grandview Ave., Mingo Junction, warrant for theft out of Wintersville County Court, Wednesday. Holt was taken into custody after he was pulled over because the license plate on the car he was driving allegedly belonged on another vehicle, police said. Holt also was cited for fictitious plates and driving under suspension.
Cited: Rebecca J. Crothers, 58, Miller Station Road, Hopedale, assured clear distance ahead after she allegedly rear-ended a vehicle stopped in traffic on University Boulevard, Wednesday; Julian Mencho, 28, 127 Second St., Amsterdam, no operator's license and no insurance after a fender bender in the Lovers Lane roundabout; Nancy L. Monigold, 64, 503 Township Road 219, Richmond, speeding; the owner of a vehicle parked in the 600 block of South Street was ticketed for overtime parking and the vehicle towed.
Code issue: A notice of violation was sent to the owners/occupants of a property at 115 Marian Place, open bag of garbage on side of residence and wrappers, cans and bottles scattered in back yard.
Jefferson County Sheriff
Knoxville Fire Department requested assistance with a male "causing a disturbance" at a brush fire on County Road 68, Wednesday. They told deputies the male "was rolling around in the fire, appearing to be under some kind of influence." Deputies said he did appear to be under the influence of some type of narcotic. TEMS transported him to the hospital for burns to his hands and feet, as well as the overdose.
