Volatile situation: A man was taken into custody after a caller reported a woman and her child were being held in a bedroom by a man she was living with “on-and-off” for the past month, Monday. Police said Joseph Mitchell, 29, 2514 Sunset Blvd., Apt. 6, was charged with domestic violence and served with a warrant for parole violation. They said as they arrived, they could see the man through an upstairs window and heard him yelling, and said when he spotted them he “quickly closed the window and the blinds.” The female, who police said was “visibly upset,” alleged Mitchell threw things around the room, then choked her as he held her by her throat against a wall and claims he several times suggested “no one would be leaving the residence.” She said he’d gotten physical the previous night at home, telling police the “large bruise” they noticed on her arm was from him throwing her against a wall. She said there’d also been an altercation at her place of work. Mitchell told police their disagreements were strictly verbal, “(denying) any physical altercation taking place and further (denying) forcing the female and juvenile to stay in the bedroom.” Police said he told them he “wished for (her) to stay and talk to him … but did not force (her) to stay.” They said he also claimed the bruise on her arm was from a few days ago when they were arguing and she “walked into the roadway and he grabbed her arm.”

Disgusting: Police reported offensive graffiti painted on a porch in the 1200 block of Ridge Avenue, Monday.

Noises: A downtown resident told police someone was in her basement, attempting to harm her, Monday. Police checked the basement but didn’t find anyone or anything out of place, but the woman didn’t believe them so they checked the basement again with her present. She refused to go to the hospital, but she called again later in the shift, again reporting someone in her basement. Police checked it again but said they didn’t find anyone.

Unhappy woman: Callers reported a couple fighting in the 100 block of Brondos Avenue, Monday. The male told them they’d been arguing and his girlfriend grabbed him by the neck, so he punched her off him to the ground. She admitted she grabbed him “after he upset her,” police said. She said he went inside and wouldn’t let her in the house, so she punched the door and knocked the glass out.” She requested a ride to a family member’s house and said she had already spoken to her boyfriend’s mother about the broken glass.

Relationship issues: Police spotted a vehicle blocking the roadway and two people standing outside arguing on Oregon Avenue at Ohio Street, Monday. The male eventually walked away but the woman continued to block the street with her vehicle. Police said when they talked with her, she was upset and advised the male was her boyfriend, and she was trying to get him in her car, but he refused. She said she didn’t like him hanging out in Steubenville, but everything was fine and nothing physical occurred.

Causing problems: A Follansbee man was taken into custody after he allegedly was “acting out” in a building in the 100 block of North Fourth Street, Monday. Police said Daniel Dyer, 51, was charged with assault, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest after he allegedly pushed a man out of the building, causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head. Police said they saw blood on the concrete where the man’s head had hit and he was taken to Trinity Medical Center West for treatment.

Had enough: Two men playing the violin and soliciting passersby in a business parking lot were ordered to leave the property, Monday. The property owner said it’s been an ongoing problem and the two are bothering customers. The two were advised they needed to leave and if they were to return, they’d be charged with criminal trespassing.

Name game: A Sunset Boulevard resident said Amazon delivered her package to a neighbor, Monday. She said she checked her security cameras and saw her neighbor take the package inside her home. The neighbor said she opened the box but realized it wasn’t hers. Police said the package just had only the purchaser’s first name on it and advised the woman to avoid confusion in the future she should add her last name to her orders, since she and the neighbor have the same given name.

Damaged: A resident in the 200 block of Cunningham Lane said someone knocked her mailbox over, Monday.

Booked: Albert A. DiPietro, 62, 3912 Sunset Blvd., Steubenville, probation violation (OVI), Monday; and Mikalea Rood, 22, 901 Bank St., Apt. 48, bench warrant out of municipal court, Monday.

Mean drunk: A woman told deputies a male put her teenage son in a headlock after dinner, Sunday. She said he “becomes mean” when he drinks, so she asked him if he’d been drinking because he was being mean.” She said he stood up and started yelling at her, so her son stood up and told him to stop. Instead of stopping, she said the male walked over behind her son and started leaning on the chair he was sitting in and when she told him to stop he shoved her so her son got up and he put him in a headlock. Another family member came down to help her separate her son from her boyfriend, and after they separated her boyfriend “advised them to get out and started screaming and calling them names.”
