Dirty living: A city resident was booked into the county jail after a welfare check was requested, Friday. Angel M. Buckel, 42, 1222 Oregon Ave., Steubenville, was charged with child endangerment after deputies allegedly found her six children living in filth. They said there was garbage and clutter littering the porch and yard, but when they made contact with Buckel they said they watched a toddler and a cat “eating rigatoni off a dirty floor,” with no food in the refrigerator “and a small amount of non-perishables on the shelf.” They also claim the bathtub was clogged and wouldn’t drain, there was feces on the floor and bathtub, ticks in the upstairs hallway, a sink filled with moldy dishes and mold on the kitchen counters and stove.

Dispute: An Adena woman told deputies her ex-boyfriend took their child and her vehicle and left her home, Saturday. She said the man was visiting the child and became upset, telling her he was “no longer tolerating it when she says when and where he can spend time with their son” and walked out the door, shoving her when she tried to stop him. He eventually returned the child and the car. She didn’t want to pursue charges, and deputies advised her on what she had to do to obtain a protection order. The woman said she’d had a PO and let it lapse because she thought he’d changed.

Steubenville Police

Graffiti: Vandals used red spray paint to deface a restroom in Belleview Park, Sunday. Police said the miscreants sprayed “Hollywood” and “Ken” on the ground in front of the building, and said they also sprayed paint on the building and bathroom doors.

Theft: A manager at Rural King said a heavy-set male with a black-and-grey beard and wearing blue shorts, a white shirt and black hat left the store with a battery from the Milwaukee tool aisle without paying, Friday. After watching video of the alleged theft, police said the man also appeared to be wearing a house arrest ankle monitor. They said he exited through a fire exit in a fenced-in area of the store and jumped into a beat-up Ford Crown Victoria that appeared to be waiting for him.

No go: Residents living in the 400 block of North Fourth Street said a woman they let sleep on their sofa refused to leave the following morning, Saturday. The homeowners said an argument ensued, but the guest eventually gathered her things and went into a hallway, where they told her she needed to leave the building. Before she did, they said the unwanted guest pushed one of them to the floor.

Fraud: A downtown employer told police a former employee used a company card to purchase gas for his personal vehicle, Friday. Police were given pictures of the employee at the gas pump and in the store.

Bloody mess: Someone reported a fight in progress in the Maryland Avenue area, Sunday. Police said they saw a juvenile walking toward Carnegie Street with his face and hands covered in blood. He and his friends refused to stop and talk to police. The youth left on foot with his mother.

Squatter: A Ridge Avenue resident told police he’s seen a woman inside a residence that’s supposed to be vacant, Sunday. He said the homeowner has been incarcerated for almost a year and the first time he saw her letting herself into the backyard he didn’t call it in, but then he watched her climb through a window on the back porch. He said the woman has red braided har, possibly in her 30s or 40s. Police searched the residence and said it was “a mess,” but no one was inside.

Fired up: Callers reported seeing a small fire in the rear of the 1300 block of Ridge Avenue, Sunday. Officers said at first glance it looked like a small brush fire in the weeds near the road, but when they got closer they realized kitchen utensils, a fire extinguisher and electrical cord were all burning and the flames were “beginning to spread out to a nearby garage.” Steubenville firefighters put the fire out.

Kid stuff: Two juveniles were charged with obstruction and criminal trespassing after police allegedly spotted them running through a garage on Lawson Avenue at State Street, Sunday. Police said the two ran from the scene. A girl was found lying in bushes in the 500 block of Maxwell Avenue while her male companion was caught on Ash Street, police said.

Pipe down: A large group of people were “drinking and talking” in a parking lot in the 800 block of South Sixth Street, Sunday. Police identified the resident and advised him to take his friends inside “because they could not drink in the parking lot.” Neighbors also had complained about the noise.

Theft: J.C. Penney employees reported seeing a woman stuffing merchandise into her purse, Friday. They said the woman “became defensive” when they asked her if she needed help, then left the store and got in a silver four-door sedan. The employees said she backed out of the parking lot “until she was away from the store (so as) to not reveal her vehicle’s rear license plate.”
