Steubenville Police

Awkward: Two people were spotted lying on the sidewalk by the Belleview Park pool house after hours, Tuesday. When police pulled up a female took off running, despite police telling her to stop. The male, who stayed behind, told them they were just hanging out and believed they were on school property. He said he only knew her as “Mary” and said he didn’t think she was a student but lived “around here.” He was told the park is city property and closes at dusk and would be charged if he’s caught in the park after hours again. Police were unable to locate the female.

Repeat offender: City detectives investigating an alleged shoplifting incident Saturday at Rural King said employees provided them with surveillance footage of the same individual leaving the store with merchandise she hadn’t paid for on multiple occasions, Tuesday. Video from a Jan. 6 theft showed the same person loading a shopping cart with merchandise valued at $1,416, including a chain saw and several dog beds. They said the individual waits until clerks are busy and pushes the cart out the door.

Squatter: Officers securing a residence in the 400 block of Clinton Street said it was abandoned and in “deplorable condition,” but it appeared someone was staying there, Tuesday. A neighbor said the door had been closed earlier in the morning “and the building has always been vacant, to her knowledge.”

Odd: Callers reported a man walking on Johnson Road, “talking to himself and throwing rocks,” Tuesday. Police couldn’t locate him.

Attention getter: A staff member at Trinity East Behavioral Health said she was assaulted by a female patient and wants to pursue charges, Tuesday. Coworkers were treating the woman, who police said had a laceration on the birdge of her nose and blood dripping from her nostrils. The patient told police she wanted to be transferred to a facility in Athens and “this was the only way she could get anyone to listen to her.” Police said she’s facing charges.

Kids out: A caller reported juveniles fighting in the vicinity of Oak Grove Avenue, Tuesday. Several juveniles were spotted leaving the area but said “nothing occurred,” police said. They were advised to head home and stay there.

Problems: A disturbance was reported at a West Adams Street location, Tuesday. While en route to the residence, a male contacted police and claimed he wasn’t at the residence and the female caller was trying to get him in trouble. The female said he was at her home, causing a disturbance. She said he has a key to her front door so he could watch their kids when she is working but leaves before she gets there so he won’t be in violation of a protection order she has against him. She said she didn’t want him returning, so deputies told her she’d need to contact her landlord about changing the locks.

Bat bag found: Police found a bat bag on the trail near the Belleview Pool shelterhouse, Tuesday. Police believe it belonged to a juvenile as it contained clothing, batting gloves, a batting helmet, two bats and two baseball gloves, all sized for a youngster. The items are in the old dispatch area, they said.

Harassing behavior: A city resident said she and a companion were followed and threatened by her ex after a family court hearing, Tuesday.

Drugs: An individual reported finding a woman lying in the 400 block of North Seventh Street and appeared to be overdosing, Tuesday. Steubenville firefighters/EMS revived the woman with Narcan, police said. She refused medical treatment and would not answer questions about what she’d ingested so she was issued a drug treatment form, police said.

Booked: Erika Benitez, 22, 732 N. Sixth St., Steubenville, bench warrant, Tuesday.
