Steubenville Police
Just desserts: Callers told police a man was on the ground after being assaulted in a Labelle business, Tuesday. The business owner told them where to find the alleged victim, but police said the man acted like nothing had happened and told them he didn't remember anything and wasn't interested in pursuing charges. Police said they didn't observe any signs of injury. Surveillance video from the store showed the man at the check-out counter along with a younger male, two females and an older man, and police said it appeared as if the alleged victim "was acting obnoxiously, bouncing around" and running his mouth, though they couldn't hear what he was saying. At one point the older male said something to the alleged victim, who police said continued behaving badly and "appeared to … intentionally bump into" the older male, who then punched him in the jaw. The alleged victim threw several punches before the older male hit him several more times, knocking him to the ground. The older man hit him two more times, then finished checking out. The younger male got a couple licks in also. Bystanders said the other men were standing inline, "minding their business, waiting to check out" when the alleged victim walked up and "began talking loudly and … verbally assaulting" a female, yelling crude and derogatory comments at her. The older man confronted the alleged victim and "told him to stop speaking to women that way but he continued, intentionally bumping into the older male. Police said all who were present advised the alleged victim "was being very disrespectful and vulgar to the females in the store and the older male stood up for them."
