Indian Creek golf outing a success

To the editor: Indian Creek would like to thank the following individuals and businesses for donating their time and contributions to our annual golf outing. Thanks to them, the 20th-annual Indian Creek Golf Outing was a huge success. All proceeds will benefit the Indian Creek athletic program and football team. First, thank you, Marshall and Highland Springs Golf Course, for your hospitality. I would like to thank my football staff for all the hard work they did in preparation for the outing and the time they put in during the outing. Next, thanks to the coaches’ wives and ...

History in the Hills: The power of objects

I love how these articles develop. Sometimes I think about a topic for days and nothing comes together and finally in the course of a conversation, a word or phrase will hit me, and I have a topic just like that. For instance, this week’s piece came together in a similar way. I spoke to someone about something and wham — topic. In this case, the topic was discovered while talking about one of my favorite things — antiques. I love antiques, and the more the merrier, as far as I am concerned. Sometimes though, practicality and space is a concern, not to mention money. With that ...

Helping others: The best dollar I have ever spent

It isn’t often I feel as if I have made any real difference in this world. In other words, no real contribution of which to speak. If you think about it, there have been so many people who have made some kind of a change in another person’s life. Think of all of the inventions there have been — the everyday things we use which assist us in some small way. Yeah, somebody created that. It’s amazing. Think about all of the people who have made a difference. The ones who have done a good deed for another and never asking for anything in return. The volunteers who have ...

One vote can matter

There’s always a lot of talk about politics and politicians, and how government at every level should be run. Yet, when there’s a chance to step up and get involved in the process, many people choose not to be involved. The latest example came in Ohio’s May 6 primary. According to Secretary of State Frank LaRose, just 10.98 percent of the state’s registered voters participated in the election. That’s 901,066 ballots cast out of the 8,205,338 registered voters across Ohio. Turnout in any off-year vote is traditionally low. There are no statewide offices on those ...

Truth or deception

To the editor: “Oh! What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive,” (Sir Walter Scott, 1808.) Many Democrats are still trying to deceive us about Joe Biden’s administration. For years we saw his mental and physical deterioration. Some Democrats are trying to profit by writing tell-all books, but others are still claiming that he was mentally fit. Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson published a book apparently describing what actually happened. Karine Jean-Pierre, the worst press secretary in history, is promoting her book about the reasons she left the Democrat ...

Guest column/Lawmakers: Please avoid reaching this first

Being the first is normally a good thing. Ask Ohio natives Thomas Edison, Neil Armstrong or the Wright Brothers. But first isn’t always best. And if some Ohio lawmakers have their way, the Buckeye State will be the first in the nation to assess a sales tax on newspapers. House Bill 96, also known as the state operating budget for calendar year 2026-27, includes provisions that would eliminate the nearly 100-year-old sales tax exemption on newspapers, businesses who advertise with newspapers in print, and printing. The bill currently sits in conference committee, where the ...
