Peach Festival tradition lives on

For more than 60 years, the annual Peach Festival has been a mainstay for the St. Thomas Episcopal Church and the Weirton community. That tradition will continue from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday as the church offers a variety of peach-centered treats, along with cabbage rolls, haluski and other refreshments, with a variety of attractions and entertainment also in the works. This year, that includes a car cruise, craft and food vendors, an inflatable attraction for the kids, and more. Area residents will be able to stop by Saturday to get their fill of shortcakes, ice cream, pies ...

Guest column/West Virginia must finalize NIL for high school athletes

On Friday, West Virginia will finally step into the present when the state Board of Education approves Item I (WVSSAC, Series 2), allowing high school athletes to benefit from their name, image and likeness. This change isn’t just overdue, it’s essential. For years, I’ve spoken publicly and privately about the need to give our student-athletes the same opportunities already available to their peers across the country. When my colleague and I started lobbying for this shift in February, only 30 states and the District of Columbia had NIL policies in place for high school students. ...

Criticism of Yost choice shameful

Last week, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced the appointment of the state’s newest solicitor general — the person who serves as the state’s lead attorney for appeals in state and federal court. He has chosen Mathura Sridharan, an Ohio native who has been deputy solicitor general since 2021. “Mathura is a relentless defender of Ohioans, a champion of federalism and legal force to be reckoned with in a courtroom,” Yost said. “Her brilliant legal mind and masterful understanding of constitutional law make her the obvious choice to lead the team as Ohio’s ...

Making Ohio’s roads safer

Have you ever been driving on the interstate and watched a commercial truck swerve a little — maybe cross the center line and quickly right itself — and wonder how in the world they drive as much and as often as they do and keep themselves and the rest of us safe? Well, the truth is (just like drivers of smaller vehicles) sometimes they don’t. Sometimes they make mistakes because they are distracted. Other times, it is because they are exhausted. But Ohio officials have a plan to make a difference on that front by adding at least 1,400 truck parking spaces across the state ...

Intel project goes from bad to worse

Oh, to have been a fly on the wall when Gov. Mike DeWine, leaders of the Ohio Department of Development and JobsOhio learned the “well, actually …” that should have been attached to news a couple of weeks ago that Intel was going to “further slow the pace of construction in Ohio.” It was a red flag then that the company did not announce a new expected completion date. Now we know why. According to a report by WCMH-TV in Columbus, Intel also said it might have to stop work on the Ohio facility altogether if it cannot find external customers for its new 14A technology, which ...

Growth in our region

No matter where you go, you will almost always find people who are more than willing to talk about things that are happening across the area. A lot of that conversation seems to gravitate toward what might have gone wrong, and there are plenty of opinions shared about what needs to be done to improve the region. It’s easy to find reasons to be critical. And, yes, there are a lot of concerns that need to be addressed. From aging infrastructure to a demographics that tend to skew toward the older end of the scale, there always will be room for improvement. But before you allow ...
