History in the Hills: Our native history

Most of us here in our area are descended from immigrants. Many of my ancestors came over in the 20th century from Europe for a better life. My great-grandmother, on the other hand, had ancestors here going back to the 17th century, and they are interesting to track down. As a student of history, I found this aspect of my family tree rewarding because I can place them in different time periods of American history. With that history though, my family only came to this part of the world for a job when the mills came. My wife on the other hand, although she grew up in Brooklyn, has ...

Post election exhale

To the editor: As someone who’s proud to be involved in our local politics, I want to take a moment to reflect on this election season and extend my sincere congratulations to all those who stepped forward to run for public office. Whether your campaign ended in victory or not, you showed something essential to the health of our democracy: A willingness to serve. Running for office requires courage, hard work and a genuine desire to make our communities better. Every candidate who put their name on the ballot contributed to that effort. To those who won — congratulations ...

This is no joke

To the editor: Comedian Gianmarco Soresi has a bit where he nervously explains the technical difference among pedophile, hebephile and ephebophile — diagnostic distinctions psychologists use for abhorrent sexual proclivities — while begging the audience to bear with him because he “has a point.” The punchline: “... the reason we don’t make those distinctions is because it’s very hard to explain the difference without sounding like a pedophile.” Apparently Megyn Kelly missed this obvious reflection when she said of Jeffrey Epstein, “He was into the barely legal ...

Guest column/Steubenville’s place in America of Abraham Lincoln

On Market Street in Steubenville, history still looks back at you. The bronze figure of Edwin M. Stanton gazes across the valley he once called home. Born here in 1814, Stanton rose from the banks of the Ohio to the heart of Washington, where he became Abraham Lincoln’s secretary of war in 1862. His relentless drive and stern resolve kept the Union armies supplied and focused through the Civil War. When Lincoln died at Ford’s Theater, Stanton kept vigil and spoke words that still echo: “Now he belongs to the ages.” That voice, that iron resolve, had its roots here. But Stanton ...

Natural gas helps keep Ohioans warm

To the editor: With the cold front coming in and temperatures dropping quickly across the state, Ohioans need reliable and affordable energy to stay warm. Our state’s essential natural gas provides the dependable power for furnaces and heat pumps. With over 63 percent of Ohio residents relying on it for home heating, natural gas is the most dependable energy source for keeping families safe and warm through the holidays. The state benefits from a reliable supply, thanks to production in the Shale Crescent region. The Shale Crescent region, encompassing Ohio, Pennsylvania and ...

Trumpism is on the line

To the editor: How is it that the current president of our great nation, Donald J. Trump, had elected to be AWOL during the recent federal government shutdown, which was the largest in our history, as he chose to decide to spend much of his time partying at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and playing golf, seemingly endlessly, while the people of our nation continued to be deprived of benefits to which they were entitled, while he personally exhibited a total lack of compassion for those who were suffering? Also, why did this man (Trump) continue to not get more personally ...
