Ohio’s energy driving investment

To the editor: Ohio’s natural gas and oil industries have continued to drive economic development in the Buckeye State. This means a flourishing job market and economy, funding for community infrastructure and energy reliability. Cleveland State University found that total upstream investments were up $615 million in the second half of 2024 when compared to the first half. These numbers reflect the continued growth of drilling activity, especially for oil-producing wells. Ohio’s shale-energy ‘drew’ in approximately $3.5 billion in fresh capital between July and ...

Guest column/Don’t import Europe’s failures: Fix U.S. drug pricing system

Millions of older Americans struggle every day to afford the medications they need. Too often, they make impossible choices: Splitting pills, skipping doses or forgoing prescriptions altogether because of the price. President Donald Trump recognizes the problem. His administration is weighing whether Medicare should cover GLP-1 medications for weight loss, a decision that could have major implications for access and cost. The White House has also recently worked with several pharmaceutical companies on voluntary “most favored nation” deals, which will secure more affordable ...

Guest column/How America buried asbestos victims in data gap

Between 1999 and 2017, Ohio recorded 12,697 asbestos-related deaths. That number includes 2,353 mesothelioma deaths and 996 asbestosis deaths. In Sandusky County alone, 104 people died from asbestos-related illness during that period. These deaths occurred in our lifetimes, in our communities, among our neighbors. Yet if you tried to find a comprehensive national registry tracking who was exposed to asbestos, where they worked, when the exposure occurred, and what health outcomes followed, you would find nothing. The United States maintains no national mesothelioma registry and no ...

Time to stop the insanity

To the editor: Senate Democrats are threatening another government shutdown in order to protect illegal alien criminals from ICE and lawful arrests and allow criminals to roam free in our communities. Why are Democrats so upset about the federal government exposing fraud, waste, theft and illegal alien criminals? Why do they not want voter ID? Maybe because it’ll be harder for them to cheat. Liberals talk about peace, tolerance and having conversations as they riot, loot, burn, invade church services and attack federal agents performing lawful operations. I can’t imagine ...

Show support for local businesses

Been stuck in the house for a while? Made one last run at the big box store before the snow, ice and frigid temperatures hit and haven’t spent an extra dime since? One day, we will be through this arctic spell. We’ll need to venture out and do a little shopping. Maybe we’ll just be ready to eat at a restaurant after having gone through everything in the pantry at home. When that time comes, consider spending your money with a smaller, locally owned establishment. Those who have either been forced to close or have seen very little traffic because of this weather may be in ...

Correction officer shortage concerning

According to a recent report by the Dayton Daily News, the Ohio state prison system was short more than 500 corrections officers at the end of last year. The Daily News conducted its investigation because Dayton Correctional Institution has the highest rate of openings, at 18.8 percent. Lebanon Correctional Institution has a vacancy rate of 11.5 percent and Warren Correctional Institution has a vacancy rate of 2.4 percent, the newspaper found. Those numbers are an improvement over the worst period in 2022, but still a significant problem for the system. Of course, state officials ...
