Candidate ready to work for residents

To the editor: The election for Jefferson County Commissioner will be held in November. Over the next nine months, I will be introducing myself to the voters, sharing my background and experience and hopefully earning your vote. I am a former civil engineering designer and hands-on builder of municipal infrastructure. That occupation has provided me with practical and comprehensive insight into how city and county water, sewer and roadway systems are designed, maintained and repaired. I understand how these systems function because I have worked on them myself. Our Jefferson County ...

Guest column/A rich legacy of serving our community

For the last 126 years, the betterment of the Steubenville community and its residents has been the focus of the Woman’s Club of Steubenville. However, after many months of consideration and deliberation, the remaining members have announced the dissolution of the organization. From its very beginning, with 12 charter members in 1899, the club grew to be the largest federated club in the state of Ohio, with more than 300 members by the mid-20th century. It affiliated with the state and general federations in the early days. The history of the Woman’s Club of Steubenville is ...

Person must be troubled

To the editor: I’m writing to thank Julie Stenger of the Herald-Star for her column (“If you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them,”) and also Carol Teaff for her letter to the editor in the Feb. 8 edition (“Animal cruelty on display.”) Both told readers about the recent animal cruelty incident. This was hard to take in, but we might begin by realizing that plenty of people share this terrible news and mourn this unnecessary suffering. It is not a sign of weakness to care about and act for homeless domestic animals. The person who did this must be very ...

Things to think about Monday

Monday is Presidents Day, and it should be a chance to reflect, to honor and to give thanks. It should be an opportunity to remember that while our president changes every four or eight years, our democracy continues to set a standard that is the envy of the rest of the world. The office itself always has served as testament to the peaceful transfer of power, even when that concept has been met with extraordinary challenges, and to the symbol of leadership that resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington, D.C. The holiday is the combination of days that originally had been set ...

History in the Hills: Historic objects

Here at Historic Fort Steuben, our museum collections are important. The historical stuff we have really makes the museum special and it can make the past feel alive to our visitors. To me, the fort itself is an artifact, even though it is a reconstruction. These buildings invite us to appreciate what life was like for the First American Regiment and the team of surveyors working to map the Northwest Territory while they were here in the winter of 1786 and 1787. With the recent cold weather and snow on the ground, I feel more connected to them than ever as the winter the soldiers were ...

Era comes to an end

There were several competing emotions in the air Monday inside the meeting room of the Main Branch of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County. Anticipation, certainly, was present. Representatives of several community organizations and nonprofits were among those who had gathered to collect their portion of $155,000 that was about to be distributed. It’s money that will be put to great use around the community, and as anyone who is involved with a nonprofit will tell you, every dollar can make a big difference in helping them to do their work. That’s why, in ...
