Red Riders edge Oak Glen 1-0

NEW MANCHESTER — Weir High scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie, then held on for a 1-0 victory on the road at rival Oak Glen on Tuesday evening.

The Red Riders’ run came on a sac fly by Nick DiMatteis, proving to be the only offense. DiMatteis also had a triple in the game for Weir, now 2-0.

Matt Geer went the distance on the mound, striking out eight batters and walking just one in tossing a five-hit shutout. He struck out the side in the seventh to close things out.

Oak Glen (0-2) got a gem on the mound from Noah Willey, who struck out 13 batters and gave up just one unearned run in a complete game.

Weir hosts Linsly tonight, while Oak Glen travels to Shadyside on Friday.

SOFTBALL

Oak Glen gets first win

NEW MANCHESTER — Nevaeh Heath had a single, double and an RBI, while Brayley Lash added two hits and an RBI as the Oak Glen softball team topped Beaver Local 4-2 on Tuesday. 

Danica Holden added a triple and RBI for the Bears (1-1). She was also the winning pitcher with 12 strikeouts and no walks in seven innings. 

For Beaver Local, Ally Wright had a double, single and an RBI. Addie Thurik and Macie Bourne also had doubles. 

Thurik took the loss with nine strikeouts and a walk in six innings. 

Oak Glen (1-1) is at Steubenville today, while Beaver Local (0-1) is at Buckeye Local today. 

Madonna stays unbeaten

WEIRTON — The Madonna softball team is off to a 3-0 start to the season.

The Blue Dons topped visiting cross-river rival Catholic Central 8-0 on Tuesday at Starvaggi Field to stay perfect on the young season.

Elaina Fresh tripled and singled, Peyton Conley had a double, Madi Owens tallied two hits and an RBI and Breea Birkhimer tallied two hits and two RBIs to lead the way offensively.

Kendal Ryan struck out eight and did not issue a walk in tossing a complete game, two-hit shutout in the circle.

The Crusaders (0-3) got hits from Genna Free and Miriam Free.

Madonna hosts Cameron today, while Central travels to Valley today.

Toronto falls to River

HANNIBAL — The Toronto softball team dropped a 7-2 decision on the road Tuesday to fall to 1-1 on the season.

Arianna Highsmith had two hits and Gracie Ruberto tallied an RBI for the Red Knights.

Toronto is back at home Thursday to host Lisbon.

Ferry tops Creek

WINTERSVILLE – The Purple Riders’ Giana Chirpas reached a milestone during their 10-run debut victory as she recorded her 100th career hit. The Ohio University recruit doubled and homered to drive in six runs. 

Tori Long doubled and tripled to drive in three runs, while winning pitcher Maddie Lucas tripled twice to plate a run. Gracie Lucas tripled in a run and Mikayla Cole doubled in another. Alivia Reese had a run-scoring single while Kendyl Brandon and Keigan Brandon evenly divided four singles.

Maddie Lucas struck out six, walked one and scattered three hits in four innings inside the circle. 

Riley Sadler singled, doubled and drove in a run for Indian Creek.

Martins Ferry travels to Barnesville Wednesday.
