Locals earn spots in Division III district in sectional matches
BARNESVILLE — Barnesville, Union Local and Martins Ferry dominated the Ohio Division III sectional wrestling tournament Saturday inside the Greenhouse at Barnesville High School. The three combined to advance three dozen individuals to district action next weekend in the Wigwam at Coshocton High School.
The Shamrocks had all 14 wrestlers punch their tickets as they claimed the team title with 295 points, which was 54.5 ahead of the Jets, who have 13 individuals still alive. The Purple Riders finished third with 219 points and had 10 qualifiers.
Barnesville crowned half-a-dozen champions, led by senior Hines Ford (175). He was joined by juniors Easton Stephen (106), Colt Carpenter (144) and Christien Hannahs (215), while sophomore Haden Bowman (132) and freshman Jaxon Aberegg (120) also won titles. Ford finished fourth in the state at 175 last year, while Carpenter was fifth at 138.
Finishing as runnersup were Hoyt Hartshorn (113); Bentley Stephen (126); Ryder King (138) and Layden Loring (150). Taking third were Braxton Loring (165) and Austin Armstrong (190), while Knoxx Mankin (157) and Zachary Foster (285) qualified fourth.
The Jets had three champions in sophomore Gamble Gossett (126); and juniors Gunnar Gossett (157) and Brody Perzanowski (190). The older Gossett was a state runnerup last winter at 144 and finished sixth at 144 as a freshman. Perzanowski was sixth at 175 last year and sixth at 157 as a frosh.
Placing second were Cole Rogers (120) and Kolten Snyder (215), while Max Dubiel (113); Preston Apostolec (150); Ethan Meyer (175) and Kolten Clark (285) finished third. Luke Kildow (106); Jaxon Lewis (132), George Groves (138) and Dominic Crum (165) all took fourth.
The Purple Riders champs were freshman Jayce Nixon (113); sophomore Colton Nixon (138) and junior Richard Welshans (165). Nixon placed seventh at 126 last year.
Taking second were Brycen Yourkovich (106); Silas Simpson (132); Keenan Lucey (144) and Nathaniel Shreve (175). Finishing third were Mason Baker (157) and Tayson Palmer (215). Cole Patterson (150) was fourth.
Shadyside had third-place finishers in Rylan Jack (120), Levin Green (126) and Josiah Green (132), while Jaycob Trigg (144) was fourth.
Bellaire is sending third-place Alex Ney (144) and fourth-place Kayse Rejonis (215).
River’s Tyler Winkler (165) placed second and Steubenville Catholic’s Patrick Morrow (120) finished fourth.

SECTIONAL
Buckeye Local placed third in the team race with 119 points and qualified five individuals, including champion Nathan Dentz (120). Chase Milton (132) was second, while Izaiah Hundley (126) and Ryder Tibbs (190) finished third. Trey McCoy (150) was fourth.
Toronto had four individuals punch their tickets, with Heath Thomas (285) leading the way as a champion. Drake Bouscher (175) was a runnerup, while Caden McGrath (157) and Christian Briggs (190) both placed third.
Bridgeport’s Ax’Zavior Santana (138) won a sectional championship. Cole Weekley (126) placed second and Dakota Lashhorn (144) was fourth.
Harrison Central’s lone advancer was Jakob Kreptowski (132) who took fourth.
GALLIA SECTIONAL
Edison placed sixth as a team in the Div. III Sectional at Gallia Academy and is sending five to the district tournament.
Kaleb Marker at 106, Kelsey Hedrick at 150 and Kaiden Mcallister at 165 each placed third in the sectional to advance and Brecken Banovsky at 132 and Nolan Haught at 144 were fourth.
Marcus Greene at 113, Edward Mcallister at 175 and Kyle Burke-Reed at 215 won fifth place matches to be district alternates.
GIRLS WRESTLING
CLAYMONT SECTIONAL
The girls were also on the mats Saturday and seven young ladies from Big Red and three from Edison advanced to districts.
Big Red’s Talia Guntrum (135) and Maleah Barbour (140) won their weight class titles, while Jahmiah Bey (100) and Kloe Anthony (170) were runners-up. Gianna Berkey (115), Briella Guntrum (130) and Gianna Millines (145) placed fourth.
For Edison, Zenfira Spencer was the sectional runner-up at 120, Lillyan Montgomery finished runner-up at 140 pounds, Kendall Adams was third at 235 and Aubrey Bower (110) and Lydia Krepps (125) won fifth place matches to be district alternates.
Big Red placed second overall as a team and Edison was 10th out of 28 teams.
