Creek’s strong start on defensive end continues in win over Panthers
CONNORVILLE — The Indian Creek girls’ basketball team delivered another strong defensive performance against Jefferson County and Buckeye 8 rival Buckeye Local.
The Redskins limited the Panthers to just six field goals and single digits in all four quarters as Indian Creek defeated Buckeye Local, 59-16, via mercy rule in a varsity-only game Monday night on the road down on Kara Bright Court.
“We started a little slow,” Indian Creek (2-0) head coach Steve Eft said. “I was trying to rotate in some of younger girls. I was trying to get them some experience. I’m trying to develop our bench. We got going in the third quarter. We stepped up. We did a good job in the second half.”
Indian Creek has only allowed 37 points in two games this season.
“That’s not bad,” Eft said.
Offensively for Indian Creek, Riley Sadler delivered a game-high 21 points, Kaydence Walker contributed 10 and Gracie Klinesmith tallied nine.
“We were a little better offensively at the start,” Eft said. “We had better ball movement. I was working on our rotations. I’m trying to get some of the younger girls experience. It was just hard for us to get into a rhythm. We also could not make a foul shot in the first half. I think we were 2-for-13 from the foul line. That didn’t help.
“We went man to start the third quarter. We were able to get into a rhythm. We pushed the ball. Our starters found a rhythm.”
For Buckeye Local, Alexis Becker recorded a team-high five points, while Brooke Driscoll collected four.
he Redskins raced out to a 13-2 lead at the end of the first, and the visitors extended their advantage to 28-11 at halftime. Indian Creek outscored the hosts, 22-4, in the third as it increased its advantage to 50-15. The girls in red outscored the girls in white, 9-1, in the fourth to account for the final score.
“I thought they would play a 2-3 zone, and they did,” Eft said. “We focused on that. They did what we thought they would do.”
Indian Creek is scheduled to play Buckeye 8 rival Beaver Local Thursday at home on Coach D Court.
Buckeye Local is slated to play Buckeye 8 rival Brooke Thursday on the road inside the Brooke Wellness Center.
