Nearly 60 local players recognized by East District
Creek’s Connor, White, Big Red’s Bryant, Toronto’s Aubiel, Central’s Sprochi earn top honors from OPSMA panel
The Ohio Prep Sports Media Association East District Awards were announced on Tuesday, and several area players and coaches were among those earning the top honors.
Members of the media covering the schools in the East District voted on all-district teams in Divisions III, IV, V, VI and VII, and players and coaches of the year in those divisions.
A state-wide panel of OPSMA members will vote on the All-Ohio honors later this month.
Locally, some 58 players from seven area schools were among those recognized.
Leading the way and earning the top honors in their divisions were Big Red running back Ca’Juan Bryant (Division III Offensive Player of the Year), Indian Creek’s Nishan White (Division IV Defensive Player of the Year) and Catholic Central’s Matthew Sprochi (Division VII Co-Defensive Player of the Year)
In addition, two local coaches received top honors as Indian Creek’s Andrew Connor was the Division IV Coach of the Year and Toronto’s Jaret Aubiel was the Division VI Co-Coach of the Year.
Bryant, Big Red’s starting tailback, racked up 893 yards in just seven games (Steubenville had one game canceled and he missed two with an injury), averaging 6.4 yards per carry and 127.6 yards per game while scoring 10 rushing touchdowns and hauling in 10 passes for another 114 yards and two more scores in helping Big Red to a 7-2 mark.
White, a 6-foot-7, 355-pound defensive lineman, racked up 15 tackles for loss, three sacks, had 40 tackles and broke up a pass in helping Creek to a 9-1 regular season.
Sprochi, who was also the team’s quarterback and rushed for more than 1,000 yards, threw for more than 700 and had 14 offensive touchdowns, was recognized on the defensive side where he had four interceptions, returning three for touchdowns, recovered a fumble and was second on the team with 63 tackles as a safety and had two return touchdowns on special teams. He shared the award with Strasburg’s Gage Moore.
Connor, the veteran Indian Creek coach for more than two decades, guided Creek to its second-straight playoff appearance, second-ever home playoff game and won the first eight-straight games for the first time since 1997.
Aubiel, in his second season guiding the Red Knights, led Toronto to a 9-1 regular season and another playoff appearance and home playoff game, which he has done in both of his seasons leading the program. He shared the award with Garaway’s Jason Wallick.
