Softball sectionals begin in W.Va., pairings set in Ohio
Believe it or not, tournament time is here.
On the West Virginia side of the river, the softball sectionals begin today, while pairings for the district tournaments have been set in Ohio.
WEST VIRGINIA
CLASS A
Madonna’s strongest season in several years earned the Blue Dons the No. 1 seed in Class A, Region 1, Section 1.
The Blue Dons will play all of their games at home inside Starvaggi Park, weather permitting.
Their quest to reach the regionals is scheduled to begin today, hosting No. 4 seed Clay-Battelle.
The winner will face the winner of No. 3 Cameron and No. 2 Trinity, who also play today.
CLASS AA
Another 20-win season and an OVAC title has led to Oak Glen being the No. 1 seed in Class AA, Region 1, Section 1, and they will host the sectional tournament on the new turf at the Field of Dreams Complex.
Their tournament quest begins Wednesday, when they will host the winner of No. 3 Tyler Consolidated and No. 2 Wheeling Central, who play Tuesday.
The double elimintion runs through Saturday if neccessary.
CLASS AAA
Weir High, likewise after continuing its streak of 20-win regular seasons, is the No. 1 seed in Class AAA, Region 1, Section 1 and will host the sectional at the Roberta “Birdie” DeFrances softball field.
The Red Riders are slated to begin play on Wednesday, when they will host the winner of No. 3 Brooke and No. 2 North Marion, who play on Tuesday.
OHIO
DIVISION III
Steubenville Big Red has earned the No. 2 seed in the East District side of the East/Southeast District tournament bracket and will open its tournament run at home, hosting No. 3 New Philadelphia at the Crimson Complex on May 14.
The winner advances to battle the winner of No. 1 Dover and No. 4 Tri-Valley/No. 5 Zanesville on May 19.
The East and Southeast winners will meet for the district title on May 21 at Harrison Central.
DIVISION IV
Harrison Central’s strong back half of the season earned the Huskies the No. 2 seed in the East District and will draw the Huskies No. 16 need East Liverpool at home on May 13.
Indian Creek is the No. 9 seed and will travel to No. 7 Philo on May 13.
The winners of those games meet on May. 20, and the district final is May 22 at a site TBD.
DIVISION V
Edison has earned the No. 4 seed and will wait for the first round to play out before hosting their opener on May 14.
They will meet the winner of No. 5 Barnesville and No. 8 Buckeye Local, who play on May 12.
The district semis are May 19, and the final is May 21 at a site TBD.
DIVISION VII
Toronto finishes as the No. 7 seed in the East District and will open on the road at No. 6 seed River on May 12.
On the other side of the bracket, Catholic Central’s return season will have a postseason return as the Crusaders are the No. 11 seed and will travel to No. 9 Beallsville on May 12.
The winner travels to No. 1 seed Conotton Valley on May 14.
The district semis are May 19 and the disttrict final is May 21, both at a site TBD.
