Huskies shut down East Liverpool to advance
CADIZ — Harrison Central was one harmless single away from a perfect game Tuesday in Cadiz.
The No. 2 seeded Huskies dispatched East Liverpool, 9-0, in the opening round of the Ohio Division IV softball postseason.
Harrison advances to next Tuesday’s district semifinal against No. 7 seed Philo. The Electrics took care of Indian Creek, 11-1, on Tuesday in Duncan Falls.
The Potters kept the hosts off the scoreboard for the first inning, after Harrison stranded runners at first and second with one out.
But the dam displayed cracks early and sprung a leak starting in the second inning.
Kamryn Crothers led off with a single and moved to third on a double from Cameron Campbell.
A passed ball allowed Crothers to score and advanced Campbell to third, who scored on a comebacker from Jaylin Ward for a 2-0 tally.
Two batters later, Kelsey Powers stroked a triple to deep center and later scored on a passed ball.
Liverpool got its lone hit to lead off the third when Chloe Galeoti singled on a fly ball to right field.
Emma Skinner then buckled down, striking out the next three batters to end the threat and leaving Galeoti stranded at first.
Campbell drove in Mikayla Pelegreen the next half-inning with a hard-hit ball to the infield.
Olivia Tonkovich brought Powers home with a RBI single in the fourth, while Campbell’s sacrifice to first allowed Kara Blackburn to score for a 6-0 reading.
Powers clubbed her second triple the next inning, scoring Ward while Blackburn singled home Powers the next at-bat.
A sacrifice from Bailey Smith scored Tonkovich the next inning for the Huskies’ final run.
Skinner struck out five without a walk, allowing only the solitary single on an otherwise unblemished pitching performance.
She yielded to Pelegreen in the sixth, who struck out five of the sixth batters she faced to seal the deal.
While Philo’s record sits sub-.500, the Electrics play in the Muskingum Valley League and regularly do battle with the likes of John Glenn, Sheridan, and Maysville.
Philo has one head-to-head with district top-seed Meadowbrook back on March 27, a 12-3 loss at home.
