Big Red splits a doubleheader
STEUBENVILLE — On a day not many teams got in a game, the Big Red softball team played two.
Big Red hosted Conotton Valley for a pair of games at the Crimson Complex Saturday, splitting with the visiting Rockets.
Steubenville won the first game, 18-9, and dropped the second, 4-2.
In the opener, Big Red fell behind 5-1 through two, but rallied back with 15 runs in the next three innings on the way to the victory.
Paige Matteson and Sadie Edwards each blasted two home runs, Edwards also hitting a triple and a double to finish a single shy of the cycle and finishing with an eye-popping nine RBIs. Matteson doubled and drove in four runs.
Emily Tuttle doubled and had an RBI, Sagan Smarrella doubled, Addison Meyer had two hits, Sena Smith had two hits, Riley Zorne had two hits and two RBIs and Gena Smith had two hits and an RBI.
Edwards was also the winning pitcher, giving up just an unearned run and striking out six in three innings of relief work.
In the second game, the Rockets again pulled ahead, this time scoring the first four runs. Big Red again tried to rally back, plating both of their runs in the bottom of the seventh, but could not come all the way back.
Riley Zorne had an RBI single and Matteson and Smarrella also tallied base hits. Isabella Cadille struck out five and allowed just an unearned run in four innings of relief work.
Big Red, now 5-2, hosts Weir High today and Oak Glen on Tuesday, weather permitting.
Oak Glen sweeps Linsly
NEW MANCHESTER — The Oak Glen softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of visiting Linsly on Saturday at the Field of Dreams Complex, topping the Cadets 16-5 and 17-2.
The victories put the Golden Bears into double digits in the win column at 10-6.
After Linlsy held an early 2-1 lead in the opener, the Golden Bears pulled away with multiple runs in each of the last five innings, a six-run seventh being the biggest.
Danica Holden and Neveah Heath both blasted a homer for the Bears, Holden driving in four runs and Heath two.
Riley Bruce was 3 for 3 with two doubles and a triple, while Kylie Robinson had a triple and two RBIs, Kayla Wright tripled, singled and drove in two runs and Addie Smith doubled, singled and drove in three runs.
Holden was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts in four innings, while Maddie Murray went the final three innings for a save, fanning two.
In the second game, Oak Glen plated seven runs in the bottom of the first to take a big early lead and did not look back.
Holden had a double, two singles and two RBIs, Wright doubled and drove in four runs, Mattie Carney had a double, single and two RBIs, Murray had a double, single and two RBIs and Bruce had a double, two singles and an RBI for another three-hit game.
Carney went all four innings in the run rule shortened win, striking out six for the victory in the circle.
The Golden Bears visit Big Red Tuesday and host Weir High on Wednesday.
Weir High suffers first loss
WEIRTON — The Weir High softball team’s unbeaten run to start the season came to an end Saturday with a 9-7 loss to Martins Ferry.
After giving up nine-straight runs to fall behind 9-1, Weir rallied with a six-run seventh inning, but came up two runs short. It was their first defeat in 10 outings.
Loganne Barton hit a grand slam in the seventh inning rally.
Eliza Utt had a double, single and an RBI, Kylie Dean doubled and Rayna Hoover had a double, single and an RBI in the loss.
Utt struck out eight batters in the circle and just four of the runs against were earned.
The Red Riders travel to Big Red today looking to bounce back.

Oak Glen splits with Trinity
NEW MANCHESTER — The Oak Glen baseball team split a doubleheader with Trinity Christian on Saturday, winning in walk-off fashion, 5-4, in the first game and dropping a 10-5 contest in the second game.
L ucas Zoellers’ walk-off RBI fielder’s choice in the bottom of the seventh of the opener gave the Bears the initial victory, it was his second RBI of the day.
Maddox McKay and Noah Willey also plated runs, McKay hitting a triple.
Willey rung up 13 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings in a no decision on the mound, while Josh Maher got the win in relief.
In the second game, Zoellers tripled and drove in two runs, while Maher also finished with a pair of RBIs.
Oak Glen hosts Cameron today, weather permitting.
Weir falls to East Fairmont
WEIRTON — Visiting East Fairmont came to Weirton on Saturday and handed the Red Riders a 12-7 setback.
The Red Riders fall to 4-5 with the loss. The Bees scored four runs in the top of the seventh after a six-run sixth had gotten Weir within a run.
Aleks Zanieski had a triple and an RBI, while Teddy Glyptis doubled and drove in a run, Leyland Nagy had three hits and an RBI and Niko Glass had a pair of hits.
Zanieski went the first four innings on the mound, racking up nine punch outs.

Creek falls to Carrollton
WINTERSVILLE — The Indian Creek softball team dropped a 19-7 decision at home to visiting Carrollton on Friday.
A seven-run seventh helped the Warriors pull away.
Kylie Dray had a homer for the Redskins, while Gracie Hollenbeck had a pair of hits and drove in three runs and McKenna Scott, Rylee Sadler and Peyton Rath also drove in a run each.
Scott struck out five in four innings in the circle.
Creek hosts Brooke today.
Red Riders top Park
WHEELING — Weir High battled to an extra-innings win at Wheeling Park on Friday, 8-7, in eight.
Gigi Paladina’s sac fly in the top of the eighth proved to be the winning run. Weir had tallied a run in the sixth to tie the game and ultimately force the extra frame. She also doubled in the game.
Brayley Lash hit a homer and singled, while Eliza Utt — who went all eight innings for the win in the circle — had two hits, Rayna Hoover doubled and plated two runs and Bella Weber doubled for Weir.
Oak Glen splits
ST MARYS — Oak Glen had two very different games in a split twinbill on the road on Friday, beating St. Marys 14-0 and falling to Logan 5-0.
In the big win, Danica Holden doubled and drove in three runs and Mikalyn Balch and Maddie Murray each drove in two runs.
Three pitchers combined for the shutout in the circle, Holden starting and fanning two, Murray striking out four.
In the loss to Logan, Addie Smith and Kayla Wright each had a base knock and Mattie Carney racked up a dozen strikeouts in the circle without walking a batter.
