Red Riders down Oak Glen in season opener

WEIRTON — The season debut for the Weir High baseball team was a successful one Thursday evening.

Hosting county rival Oak Glen, the Red Riders won their opener, 15-3, in five innings on the artificial turf on the campus of Weir High School.

After taking an early 2-0 lead, the Red Riders bats exploded in the bottom of the second with seven runs.

They added one more in the third and then had a five-run outburst in the fourth, as Weir plated the first 15-straight runs of the game.

The Golden Bears (0-2) put up three in the top of the fifth but it was not enough to stop the mercy rule from coming into play.

Leyland Nagy had a big day from the leadoff spot for the Red Riders, finishing with a double and a triple while drivinf in three runs.

Liam Williamson and Niko Glass also had multi-hit days for Weir High, Williamson with a pair of doubles and two RBIs and Glass with a pair of single and an RBI.

Aleks Zanieski, who also had an RBI, pitched the first two innings, fanning four to be credited with the win. Evan Kaczmrek, who doubled and had an RBI, had two Ks in relief.

Josh Maher had a double and an RBI for Oak Glen in the loss, while Cam Carter also plated a run.
