Madonna baseball makes it back-to-back victories

WEIRTON — The first loss of the season is now far in the rear view mirror for the Madonna baseball team.

The Blue Dons put it behind them with their second win in as many days Wednesday, this time topping visiting Clay-Battelle 10-1 at Bowman Field.

Madonna, which improved to 3-1 with the victory, scored the first six runs of the game and added four more in the sixth after the Cee-Bees got on the board to provide the final margin.

David Connors had a double, single and two RBIs, Reno Fuscardo had two singles and two RBIs and Koleton Grishkevich doubled.

Matt Geer, Reed Wilharm and Brayden Miller also had an RBI for the Dons.

On the mound, Wilharm tossed five scoreless innings, striking out seven and walking just one. Geer went the last two innings, fanning three and allowing just an unearned run.

“Reed pitched very well today. He was in the zone all evening and set us up very well for success. Matt came in and was very efficient closing it out,” Madonna head coach TJ Miller said. “We still need to clean up some things and be more consistent at the plate, but we’re making improvements each outing. I’m very proud of the team and their efforts.”

Golden Bears top Beavers

NEW MANCHESTER — The Oak Glen softball team snapped a two-game slide and got back above the .500 mark with a run-rule victory over visiting Beaver

Local Wednesday evening at home.

After leading 2-1 through two innings, the Golden Bears (3-2) plated four in the third to pull away and added five in the fourth to bring the run rule into play.

Danica Holden fired five innings of one-run ball, holding the Beavers off the board through the last four innings. She struck out eight and didn’t issue a walk.

At the plate, Riley Bruce blasted a three-run inside-the-park homer and finished with four RBIs. Maddie Murray tallied two hits and an RBI, while Mattie Carney, Macie Hartung and Mikalyn Blach also tallied an RBI each.

Huskies pull away from St. C again

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — After beating St. Clairsville on opening day at home Monday, Harrison Central made it two wins over the Red Devils by the run rule with a 16-1 win on the road Wednesday.

fter opening a 7-1 lead through four innings, the Huskies drove in nine runs in the top of the fifth to bring things to an early ending.

Olivia Tonkovich had a triple, single and two RBIs, Bailey Smith tallied three hits and three RBIs, Kelsey Powers went 5 for 5 with an RBI and Kara Blackburn had a double, single and two RBIs.

Emma Skinner gave up just an unearned run and did not allow a hit in her five innings in the circle.

Creek falls at Ferry

MARTINS FERRY — The Indian Creek softball team dropped a 9-7 decision on the road at Martins Ferry on Wednesday.

Creek, which fell to 1-2, took a 5-0 lead in the top of the third, just to see the Purple Riders tie it up 5-5 in the bottom half. After Creek went back ahead 6-5 in the fifth, Ferry again answered with a big inning, this time plating four to go ahead 9-6, and held on from there.

The Redskins got a double, single and three RBIs from Kylie Dray, while Payton Rath also doubled and drove in a run.

Creek was plagued by six errors, as just two of the nine runs Ferry scored were earned. McKenna Scott had four strikeouts in the circle.
