Hoover hits milestone on record night, leads Weir girls to victory

WEIRTON — Rayna Hoover had a night to remember.

Hoover recorded a single game record 43 points leading the Weir girls’ basketball team to a 69-38 victory against rival Brooke Monday night on Ron “Fritz” Williams Court inside the Carl Hamill Fieldhouse.

Hoover broke the old record of 41 set by Raegan Stead back in 2015.

Hoover also surpassed the 1,000 point mark for her career earlier this season.

“I am proud of her for that,” Weir (7-12) head coach Rick Stead said. “She played well.

“We have faced some adversity this season and her and Maleea (Faulks) have remained consistent. They have remained with the team. They have played hard for the team. They have helped the young kids. They have set the stage for next season.”

Hoover finished the game with 16 2-pointers and two 3-pointers, while going 5-for-8 from the free-throw line. The senior standout tallied 24 points in the first before tallying 19 more in the second.

Faulks finished with 13 points for Weir.

Marionna Dipaolo and Rilyn Bowman each delivered 13 points for Brooke.

The Red-and-Black led 24-4 at the end of the first quarter before taking a 38-16 lead into the locker room at halftime. The victors led 54-28 entering the fourth. The hosts netted the first nine points of the fourth to build a 63-28 advantage.

“They played well tonight,” Coach Stead said about his team’s performance. “They moved the basketball. We were able to score in transition. I thought we could have done a better job at times defensively, but when games get one sided it can be tough to keep everyone together. We did well on offense, and we played good defense.”

The victory enabled the Red Riders to sweep the season series from the Bruins. Weir defeated Brooke, 60-13, back on Dec. 5 on the road inside the Brooke Wellness Center. Weir and Brooke are back in the same section this season.

“We voted today,” Coach Stead said. “We split with North Marion, and we won two games against Brooke. “We got the regional ballot. We will see if we are at home or on the road Feb. 28.”

Brooke is scheduled to play John Marshall Wednesday night at home. It will be the first meeting this season between the Bruins and the Monarchs.

Weir is slated to play Wheeling Central Thursday night on the road. The Maroon Knights defeated the Red Riders, 79-71, Dec. 19 on the road in the two team’s first meeting this season.
