Creek takes care of business in tourney opener

WINTERSVILLE — The Indian Creek girls’ basketball team sent its two seniors out in grand style.

Indian Creek – the No. 2 seed – tallied the first 11 points of the game and never looked back en route to a 60-25 victory via mercy rule against 13th seeded River View in an Ohio Division IV Eastern District Sectional Co-Final Thursday night on Coach D Court.

“They were running a box-and-1 on Mac early, and we had to adjust,” Indian Creek (14-9) head coach Steve Eft said. “I thought our defensive pressure on the ball was good all night. We were able to create some turnovers, and we were able to get out into transition. Offensively, the girls did a good job of adjusting to what they were doing defensively.”

The game was the last one at home for the Redskins’ two seniors – McKenna Scott and Cam Ketron.

“It is always nice to win your last home game,” Eft said. “They both had good games. I am happy for them. The girls are happy for them. It is great they were able to win their last home game. We have had a lot of success the last few years, and they are a big part of that.”

With the win, Indian Creek will play No. 14 seed St. Clairsville in the district semifinal at 7 p.m. at a site to be determined. The Redskins defeated the Red Devils, 62-19, Nov. 26 on the road down at John Jenkins Court in the two team’s lone meeting this season.

“The last time I saw them was down at the Buckeye 8 Championships,” Eft said. “We were so focused on River View that we have not watched any film on St. Clairsville. We are going to enjoy this win tonight, and tomorrow we are going to start to get ready for St. Clairsville. We are going to have to get the girls ready to go.”

After building an 11-0 lead to start the game, Indian Creek took a 15-4 lead into the second quarter. The Redskins increased their advantage in the second to 22-4 with a little under five minutes left in the half. Later, the victors extended their advantage to 30-10 with 21 seconds remaining in the quarter before taking a 30-12 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The story remained the same in third.

The Redskins built a 46-19 advantage with 22 seconds left in the quarter before the Black Bears (5-18) hit a free throw to make the score, 46-20, entering the fourth. Scott jumpstarted the Indian Creek offense in the quarter.

The hosts outscored the visitors, 14-5, in the fourth to bring the running clock into play and to account for the final score.

Four players produced double figures in points for Indian Creek. Individually, Kaydence Walker recorded a game-high 23 points to lead the way. Walker scored 12 points in the first half and 11 in the second.

“Kaydence had a big night offensively,” Eft said. “She understands now that when teams try to take away Mac, that opens up some holes for her. She was able to take advantage of that tonight. She had a big night offensively. I am proud of her. She has worked really hard. I am really proud of her. I think that might be a career-high for her.”

Also for the Creek, Scott tallied 12 points – nine of which came in the second half, and Riley Sadler and Ketron each recorded 10.

“Mac was able to get some turnovers on defense, and she was able to get to the rim,” Eft said about Scott’s play in the third quarter. “She was able to get going.

“Riley and Cam each had good nights offensively. They both do so much for us. They play defense, and they rebound. They get overlooked. They had good nights offensively. They stepped up and had a really good game.”

Elaina Brenly led the way offensively for the visitors from Coshocton County with seven points, while Kortnee Mickle collected five.

The Redskins bounced back against the Black Bears as Indian Creek had lost its regular season finale to John Marshall, 45-40, Monday night at home.

“We were able to move past that game,” Eft said. “We talked about it. The girls were ready to go tonight. We are going to have to get the girls ready to go for St. Clairsville. We want to stay focused. We are taking it one game at a time.”
