NEW MANCHESTER — Two teams bound for next week’s OVAC tournament met in a rescheduled make up game Thursday and fought through a close battle that came down to the fourth quarter.

Homestanding Oak Glen emerged victorious, using a fouth-quarter surge to top visiting Catholic Central, 48-43.

The Crusaders (11-7) held a one-point lead going to the fourth quarter after the game was tied at halftime, but the Golden Bears (10-6) out-scored the visitors 16-10 in the fourth to reach double digits in their win total.

Mikalyn Balch led Oak Glen with a game-high 19 points and Tia Vick also reached double digits with 10.

For Central, Mara Delaney talled a team-leading 17 points, one more than Mary Rohde’s 16.

The Golden Bears will travel to Edison Monday in the Class 4A semifinals, while Catholic Central hosts Toronto in the Class 2A semis on Monday.

Edison tops Beaver

CALCUTTA — The Edison girls basketball team added another win to its total headed into OVAC tournament play, topping Beaver Local on the road Thursday night in a regular season game, 56-43.

The Wildcats (15-4) outscored the Beavers 27-17 in the second half to pull away.

Sophia Henderson had a big night to the lead the way for Edison, racking up 26 points. Kylie Stull followed with 10 and Abby Carpenter with eight.

The Wildcats are set to host Oak Glen on Monday in the Class 4A semifinals.
