Big Red girls wrestling second at New Lex Invite with two champs

NEW LEXINGTON — The Big Red girls wrestling team grappled its way to a second place finish at the 55-team New Lexington Girls Wrestlng Invitational on Sunday, and in the process put two wrestlers on top of the individual podium.

Steubenville racked up 184.5 points, second to only the 286.5 compiled by Vincent Warren.

Edison also competed in the event, placing tied for 30th.

Defending state champ sophomore standout Talia Guntrum topped the podium with a quick pin in the 125-pound final and Maleah Barbour tech falled to the 135-pound title.

Also for Big Red, E’Laysia Christian was fourth at 105 pounds and Gianna Millines was sixth at 140,

The podium finisher for the Wildcats was Kendall Adams, who finished fourth at 235 pounds.

BOYS WRESTLING

Big Red runner up at Brooke

WELLSBURG — Big Red had two champions and 198 points, trailing only event winner Cathedral Prep School of Erie, Pa., which won the Fred Ferguson Classic at Brooke High School on Saturday.

Steubenville’s Cooper Smith (144) and Brody Saccoccia (157) earned individual championships. Beau Hudson (285) was second.

Locals place in Panther Classic

CONNORVILLE — Three local teams finished in the top 10 at Saturday’s Panther Classic at Buckeye Local and several local wrestlers ended the day on the podium.

Indian Valley topped John Marshall and Fairmont Senior for the team title, while Indian Creek led the charge locally placing sixth, just ahead of Weir (seventh) and host Buckeye Local (eighth), while Edison finished in 11th in the 20-team event.

Winning individual titles were Buckeye Local’s Nathan Dentz (106) and Indian Creek’s Ethan Starr (132).

Placing in the event from local teams were Indian Creek’s Jackson Scharfenberg (third at 113), Weir High’s Wyatt Hostuttler (third at 120), Buckeye Local’s Chase Milton (fourth at 120), Weir’s David DeFelice (runner up at 138), Edison’s Nolan Haught (fourth at 138), Weir’s Jonathan Rhodes (sixth at 144), Indian Creek’s Franco Barcalow (seventh at 144), Edison’s Becken Banovsky (eighth at 144), Indian Creek’s Ian Starkey (third at 150), Edison’s Rickey Sinsel (sixth at 150), Buckeye Local’s Gavin Edgell (seventh at 150), Indian Creek’s Quinn Ujcich (eighth at 157), Weir’s Joshua DeFelice (third at 165), Indian Creek’s Gavin Pownall (fifth at 165), Edison’s Cole Pittman (seventh at 165), Weir’s Ben Bryant (third at 175), Indian Creek’s Luke McMillion (third at 190), Weir’s Hunter Strong (fifth at 190), Buckeye Local’s Ryder Tibbs (fourth at 215), Weir’s Brock Hebb (seventh at 215), Edison’s Gabriel Glenn (fourth at 285) and Buckeye Local’s Alex Alvarez (fifth at 285).

Toronto, CCHS compete at EP

EAST PALESTINE — Toronto’s wretling team placed sixth and Catholic Central’s 10th in Saturday’s East Palestine Bulldog Invite.

Central’s Chris Hermann (132) and Toronto’s Heath Thomas (285) won individual titles at the event.

Also placing were Toronto’s Ryvor Cross (sixth at 113), Kenny Jett (third at 138), Caden McGrath (runner up at 150), Zavier Kinsey (runner up at 175), Christian Briggs (sixth at 190) and Catholic Central’s Peter Liebhaber (runner up at 215).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Huskies win another

CADIZ — Harrison Central continued its win streak by roaring past visiting Brooke 52-18, on Saturday at home.

The Huskies have now won five straight and are poised to be the top seed in the OVAC Class 4A tournament.

Lauren Doane led three Harrison Central players in double digits with 18 points and five rebounds. Maddie Sedgmer and Mikayla Pelegreen each added 11, Sedgmer grabbing 10 rebounds for a double-double.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Buckeye 8 games held

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Buckeye 8 boys basketball championships were played Saturday at the ECO Center.

St. Clairsville edged East Liverpool 60-58 in the title game, while Cambridge defeated Beaver Local 63-58 for third place, Union Local downed Harrison Central 40-23 for fifth place and Bellaire topped Indian Creek 56-48 for seventh.
