Big Red boys keep rolling to their ninth-straight win

STEUBENVILLE — The Big Red boys basketball team just keep rolling.

After winning the annual city championship game on the road Friday, Big Red returned home Saturday afternoon and made it wins on back-to-back days — and nine-straight overall — with a 92-53 victory over visiting River View inside the Crimson Center.

The 92 points were a new season high for now 9-1 Steubenville. Big Red drained 14 3-pointers and all five players in the starting lineup reached double digits in scoring.

Santino Haney led the team with 20 points, Aiden Davis followed closely with 18, Cole Bowers tallied 16, Tre Wiggins netted 12 and Will Taylor finished with 11.

Davis and Bowers each knocked down four 3s, while Wiggins and Haney had two each.

All told, nine different players found the score sheet for Big Red, which scored 30 points in the third quarter to pull away after leading 45-29 at halftime.

Big Red is slated to host Wheeling Park at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Weir High falls in Burgettstown event

BURGETTSTOWN ­– The Weir High boys basketball team dropped a 65-38 decision to Quaker Valley in an event at Burgettstown High School on Saturday.

The Red Riders, now 2-5, were led by seven points each from Ryant Lyons and Damir Mowde, while Justin Kaczmarek tallied six.

The Red Riders are scheduled to travel to Brooke on Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

McShan reaches milestone in loss to Park

STEUBENVILLE — Defending OVAC and West Virginia state champion Wheeling Park may have rallied to defeat the Big Red girls basketball team on Saturday evening, but it was a milestone day for a Steubenville player.

Big Red junior standout Nylah McShan tallied 17 points for Steubenville, putting her over the 1,000 point mark for her career.

The Patriots prevailed in the game by a score of 52-41, rallying with a 15-3 game-deciding run after Big Red had held a one-point lead in the fourth quarter.

WRESTLING

Edison tops Shadyside event

SHADYSIDE — The Edison wrestling team posted the highest team score to win Shadyside’s Last Man Standing tournament on Saturday.

The Wildcats’ Cole Pittman was selected as the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the event, racking up a pair of first period pins and a technical fall on the way to winning the 165-pound title.

Gage Hennis (126) and Nolan Haught (138) also won individual titles for Edison.

Big Red’s Cedric Peckens (106), Catholic Central’s Chris Hermann (132), and Toronto’s Caden McGrath (150), Drake Bouscher (157) and Heath Thomas (285) also won titles.

Panther wins in Zanesville

ZANESVILLE — Buckeye Local’s Nathan Dentz pinned his way to a 106-pound title on Saturday at the West Muskingum Tornado Classic wrestling tournament Saturday.
