OVAC girls basketball tourney field is set

STEUBENVILLE — The elite eight have had their tickets punched to the dance.

Eight local girls’ basketball teams have secured a spot in the annual OVAC Tournament. The top four teams in all five classes advance to the tournament. The tournament is scheduled to begin with the semifinals Monday night at the higher seeded, with the finals taking place Feb. 8 down at the ECO Center in St. Clairsville.

Four local teams advanced to the tournament in Class 4A, two made it in Class 2A and one made it in Class 5A and Class 1A. There are no local teams in Class 3A.

Harrison Central claimed the regular season title in Class 4A.

Harrison Central is followed in the standings by Edison, Oak Glen and Indian Creek. The top-seeded Huskies will take on the fourth-seeded Redskins in the semifinals at home. Indian Creek has already defeated Harrison Central twice (56-19 and 51-29) this season. Edison – the No. 2 seed – will host No. 3 seed Oak Glen in the other semifinal. The Golden Bears defeated the Wildcats, 64-50, on the road in the two team’s only scheduled matchup this season.

The two semifinal winners will meet in the tournament final at 10 a.m.

Indian Creek has won the last two tournament titles by defeating Buckeye Local, 58-41, last season and Oak Glen, 42-26, in 2023. Redskins’ standout McKenna Scott was named the John Howell Memorial Most Valuable Player in both games.

Catholic Central claimed the regular season title in Class 2A.

Catholic Central is followed in the standings by River, Southern and Toronto. The top-seeded Crusaders will play hosts to the fourth-seeded Red Knights in one semifinal at home inside the Mickey Barber Gymnasium. In the other semifinal, the No. 2 seeded Pilots will take on the third-seeded Indians at home.

The semifinal will be the only match up of the regular season between the Crusaders and the Red Knights.

The two semifinal winners will meet in the tournament final at 4 p.m.

Morgantown claimed the regular season title in Class 5A.

Morgantown is followed in the standings by Big Red, Wheeling Park and University. The Mohigans – the No. 1 seed – will take on the fourth-seeded Hawks in one semifinal, while No. 2 seed Big Red will play host to the third-seeded Patriots in the other semifinal. Wheeling Park defeated Big Red, 52-41, on the road inside the Crimson Center in the two team’s first meeting this season.

The two semifinal winners will meet in the tournament at noon.

Frontier claimed the regular season title in Class 1A.

Frontier is followed in the standings by Cameron, Heartland Christian and Madonna. The Cougars – the No. 1 seed – will take on No. 4 seed Madonna at home in one semifinal, while the second-seeded Dragons will take on the third-seeded Lions at home in the other semifinal.

The winners of the two semifinals will meet in the tournament final at 2 p.m.

Wheeling Central claimed the regular season title in Class 3A.

Wheeling Central is followed in the standings by Union Local, Fort Frye and Bellaire. The top-seeded Maroon Knights will play the fourth-seeded Big Reds at home in one semifinal, while the second-seeded Jets will play host to the Cadets in the other semifinal.

The winners of the semifinals will meet in the tournament final at 6 p.m.

The losers of all of the semifinal games will meet in the consolation finals Feb. 6.

The first consolation pool games will also be played Monday. Locally, Buckeye Local will play at Bridgeport, Beaver Local will play at Weir and Valley will play at Brooke.

The second set of games will be played Thursday. Locally, Caldwell will play at Buckeye Local, Weir will play at East Liverpool and Brooke will play at Beaver Local.
