Big Red girls fire on all cylinders against Brooke
STEUBENVILLE – Saturday was a good day for the Big Red girls’ basketball team.
Big Red received contributions from all 13 players who played as Big Red defeated Brooke, 69-10, via mercy rule in a varsity-only afternoon game inside the Crimson Center.
“It was a good day,” Big Red (10-5) head coach Angie Forte said. “We made it through the day.”
Nine players scored in the game for the Red-and-Black.
“It was a good night,” Forte said. “Every kid got the opportunity to see some floor time. That is the building blocks of your program. Everyone got some experience. Kids knocked down shots. That will help them gain confidence. I am very proud of the girls. They continued to push each other in each quarter.”
Nylan McShan netted a game-high 24 points to lead the way offensively for Big Red, Gabby Vein tallied 11 and Phynyx Fleming and Bailee Beall each collected eight. Also, Kaylie Lewis and Jazmin Montgomery scored their first varsity points in the win.
Andrea Bolen delivered a team-high four points for the Bruins, while Emily McLaughlin tallied three.
“They are a very young Brooke team,” Forte said. “Hats off to their coach and to their girls. They did not quit. They came down and got shots off. They still hustled. I have to give their young kids credit. They continued to push. I believe they have some younger kids coming up who can help the program.”
The girls from Jefferson County led 25-5 at the end of the first quarter and 45-10 at halftime. The hosts increased their advantage to 55-10 entering the fourth.
“This game was a tribute to Mr. Nate Freeman,” Forte said. “I’m glad we were able to get the win today in honor of him for all of his dedication to Steubenville City Schools and all of athletic programs.”
Big Red is scheduled to play Weir Thursday night on the road inside the Carl Hamill Fieldhouse.
Brooke is slated to play Edison Thursday night on the road.
