Big Red boys open season with a win on the road

MINERVA — The Big Red basketball team’s season is off to a strong start.

Steubenville opened up its campaign Tuesday night with a trip to Minerva and came back home with a season-opening victory, topping the Lions 64-49.

Big Red trailed by a point after a quarter, but inched ahead 27-25 by halftime and used a 26-point outburst in the third quarter to pull away.

Will Taylor led the Crimson and Black with a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds, while Trevon Wiggins knocked down three treys to net 15 points, Aiden Davis tallied 14 points and nine boards and Santino Haney put up 10 points for four players in double figures.

Big Red hosts Toronto on Friday night in its home opener.

Crusaders improve to 4-0

BRIDGEPORT — The Catholic Central boys basketball team remains unbeaten after topping Bridgeport 63-57 on the road on Tuesday night.

The Crusaders, now 4-0, out-scored the Bulldogs 24-18 in the second half after the game was knotted up at halftime.

Benji Rook went off for Cntral with 38 points, hitting five triples, and Camden Bradley netted 13 points.

Red Knights top Tigers

WELLSVILLE — The Toronto boys basketball team topped Wellsville 72-45 on Tuesday night.

The Red Knights were led by a 33-point night from Austin Buchanon, inlcuding a 9 for 9 performance from the foul line. Brady Fair netted 11 and Landon Grimes 10.

Edison wins in OT

SALINEVILLE — The Edison boys basketball team earned a season-sweep of its games with Southern Local, topping the Indians 76-66 in overtime on Tuesday.

The Wildcats out-scored Southern 17-7 in the extra period.

Bryce Rogers led the Wildcats with 22 points, while Jaxon Wiley had 16, Jackson McBane had 15, Kyle Long had 14 and Isaiah Filburn netted 10.

BOWLING

Brooke sweeps Morgantown

MORGANTOWN — The Bruins’ Darion Hilton rolled games of 205 and 237 for a 442 series and Dawson had a 364 series as the boys won 2,107 to 2,076.

Girls

Kaylee Tuttle had games of 163 and 143 for a 306 series as the Bruins prevailed, 1,246 to 1,125.

Brooke Defeats Union Local

(Monday)

WELLSBURG — The Bruins’ boys narrowly defeated the Jets 1,646 to 1,637, led by Darion Hilton’s series of 408 and Seth Schroeder’s 349. Nathan Barbe led Union Local with a 363 series.

Girls

It was another close game, with Brooke winning 1,137 to 1,100. Kaylee Tuttle put together games of 155 and 136 for a 291 series. Dany Eibach was the Jets’ top performer with a 258 series.
