Creek puts a complete game together to top Edison

WINTERSVILLE — A big second quarter set the stage for a big win for the Indian Creek boys’ basketball team.

Indian Creek led rival Edison by two points at the end of the first, however, the Redskins outscored the Wildcats by 14 points in the second and did not look back en route to a 60-36 victory Monday night on Coach D Court.

“We have had glimpses of trying to put four quarters of basketball together,” Indian Creek (2-7) head coach Joe Dunlevy said. “In the second quarter, we played really well. That is how we want to play all the time. We moved the ball on offense. We played defense. Now, we want to progress to playing four quarters like that.”

After leading 15-13 after one quarter, the Redskins extended their advantage out to 32-16 at halftime. The hosts led by as many as 26 points in the game.

“On the defensive side of the ball, we let them cut how they wanted,” Edison (3-6) head coach Jeremy Matics said. “We let them run their offense. We could not get shots to fall on the offensive side. We need to have a couple of good practices to get this season back on track.”

The hosts led 40-24 entering the fourth. The biggest lead came late in the game as Indian Creek increased its advantage to 60-34.

Three players produced double digits in points for the Redskins. Individually, Nick Eddey collected a game-high 16 points, Carl Bonecutter recorded 14 and Caleb Bodo tallied 10.

“They play good defense,” Matics said. “Hats off to Coach D. He has been doing this a long time. He does a great job. We have to have a couple good practices and keep trying to get better.”

Jaxon Wiley tallied a team-high 11 points to lead the way offensively for the visitors, while Bryce Rogers recorded eight and Kyle Long and Jackson McBane each collected seven.

“Their kids – they play really hard,” Dunlevy said. “They play a lot of young kids. They play hard. Fortunately, we were able to get our hands on some balls. Their kids do what they are told, and they play hard. We told our kids at our shootaround that they play really hard.

“Jeremy does a great job. Their kids play hard. Our kids play hard. They beat us here last year. Most coaches you coach against do a great job. Jeremy does a great job. It doesn’t always show up in wins and losses. Their kids play together. They do what you want them to do.”

After leading by two at the end of the first, the Redskins ripped off an 8-0 run to start the second as the victors took a 23-13 lead with 5:45 left to play in the first half. Later, Bodo delivered his second 3-pointer of the night to make the score 32-16 with 1:26 remaining to be played before halftime.

Both teams scored eight points in the third quarter, and Indian Creek outscored Edison, 20-12, in the fourth to account for the final score.

Indian Creek is scheduled to play rival Harrison Central Friday night at home.

Edison is slated to play Trinity Christian Friday night on the road.
