Ohio football playoff matchups are set

The regular season came to a close in the Buckeye State and the playoff matchups have been set.

The OHSAA released the final computer rating standings following the final regular season games on Saturday and announced the official playoff pairings Sunday.

Locally, five local teams have finished in the top 16 in their region and qualified for the post season in four different divisions.

They are Steubenville Big Red and Indian Creek in Division III, Edison in Division V, Toronto in Division VI and Catholic Central in Division VII.

Big Red, Toronto and Catholic Central will play at least their opening round games at home. Big Red and Central each finished high enough in their regions that, should they win in the opening round, they would also play at home in the second round.

Both Big Red and Indian Creek made the playoffs in Division III, Region 13.

Big Red finished the regular season 10-0 and finished second in the region. They will host No. 15 Delaware Buckeye Valley on Friday night at Harding Stadium. Buckeye Valley is 6-4.

Indian Creek, by virtue of its win over Edison Friday night, made the field by finishing at No. 13 in the region. They will travel to No. 4 Newark Licking Valley (9-1) Friday night.

Edison finished No. 9 in Division V, Region 17 and just missed hosting in the first round by less than a percentage point. The Wildcats (7-3) will travel to No. 8 seed Girard (6-4) in the first round on Friday night.

In Division VI, Region 21, Toronto (7-3) finished No. 7 in the region and will host No. 10 Wickliffe (7-3) on Friday night at Clarke Hinkle Stadium.

In Division VII, Region 27, Catholic Central’s win over Pittsburgh Carrick Saturday night secured the No. 4 spot in the region for the Crusaders, who finished the regular season 7-3. They will host No. 13 seed River (4-6) Saturday night at Harding Stadium.

There are still two weeks left in the regular season in West Virginia. Currently, Madonna is in a playoff spot, sitting No. 15 in Class A according to WV Tailgate Central.
