Big Red’s run ends in regional semis
ATHENS — The Big Red boys soccer team’s postseason run came to an end on Wednesday in the Division III regional semifinals.
Steubenville, which was in the regionals for the second time in three years, dropped a 5-0 decision to Chilciothe at Joe Burrow Stadium in Athens.
Big Red hung with the Cavaliers and had some chances in the first half, but they did not get a bounce they needed and Chilicothe took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Chilicothe then pulled away further in the second half to advance to Saturday’s regional championship to play for a spot in the state tournament.
Big Red’s successful season comes to an end with a record of 13-4-3.
Chilicothe, now 16-3, which will take on St. Frances DeSales in the regional championship at noon on Saturday.
With the end of its season, Big Red will depart a large, successful senior group of Jacob Burchfield, James Devereaux, Brady and Luke Dinovo, Hayden Hicks, Ethan Llewellyn, Robby Lucas and Isaac Rosel.
“I would like to thank our seniors,” Big Red head coach Greg Bowers said. “They have left their mark with three straight district championship appearances, two district championships and one regional runner-up.
“They took the standard we expect to achieve year in and year out and set the bar higher.”
