WHEELING — In the sport of wrestling bonus points can be critical, especially in dual meets.

Defending W.Va. Class AAA state champion Wheeling Park recorded extra-points in 15 of its 21 victories in a triangular sweep of visiting Region I rivals Parkersburg and Brooke Wednesday night inside the ‘Palace on the Hill’ at Wheeling Park High School.

The top-ranked Patriots pinned the Big Reds 65-18 before rolling past the Bruins 56-21. Brooke decisioned Parkersburg, 42-33, in the night’s first match.

“That’s kind of been our motto the last couple of years. We love bonus points and pins and we preach to the guys to try and get it done,” Wheeling Park head coach Brian Leggett said. “We had a couple of guys out of the lineup due to sickness, but I was happy that the guys filled in those spots and we didn’t miss a beat.”

Leggett was referring to Jerome Maynard (132), Giovanni Robinson (157) and Gavin Washington (190).

Jerome Maynard had a pair of pins – one in 49 seconds – filling in for defending state runner up Jack Lowe, while Washington had a pin and lone Wheeling Park decision of the night.

It was Maynard’s pin in 1:57 that snapped a 12-all deadlock with the Big Reds and was the first of four straight falls as returning state placer Adam Carman (138) followed with a lightning-quick 27-second stick; returning state champion at 138 Bradyn Lucas (144) won in 1:58; and returning state placer Quinton Velas (150) needed just 48 seconds.

Following a pin by Brooke’s Timmy Hudson (157), the Patriots reeled off five consecutive wins, the final three by pin, to close out the dual.

Jameson Maynard (175), Jerome’s cousin, recorded a first-period technical fall against Parkersburg while he pinned his Brooke opponent in 1:57.

“Jameson actually bumped up from 165 to 175 tonight and looked really good,” Leggett noted. “He’s coming off winning a championship at North Canton which is quite an accomplishment. I think we’ve only had four North Canton champions in the history of our program, and for a sophomore to do it at a heavier weight was impressive.”

Wheeling Park’s Noah White (120) had a pin and a forfeit, while Hunter Means (285) had a pair of falls, one in a mere 22 ticks.
