Tournament time for local teams: Sectionals begin Saturday in Ohio

As tournament time approaches in Ohio, beginning Saturday for some soccer teams, local teams opening round matchups have recently been set.

Steubenville’s two girls soccer teams earned high seeds in their respective divisions, as Big Red and Catholic Central are each a No. 3 seed.

GIRLS SOCCER

In the Division II, East 2 bracket, No. 3 seed Big Red is set to host Duncan Falls Philo, the No. 13 seed , at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 in a sectional final.

Should coach Annie Curti’s Big Red prevail, it would host the winner of No. 5 Zanesville and No. 11 Riverview on Oct. 25 in the district semis.

In that same bracket, the Indian Creek girls soccer team is the No. 16 seed and is set to travel to No. 15 McConnelsville Morgan Monday at 4:30 p.m.

If the Redskins win, they will face top seed St. Clairsville on Oct. 21 in the sectional final.

Staying in Division II, in the East 1 bracket, Harrison Central is the No. 12 seed and travels to No. 7 Millersburg West Holmes in its sectional match at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 20.

The winner of that match advances to face the No. 2 Dresden Tri-Valley or No. 14 East Liverpool/No. 17 Minerva on Oct. 25.

In Division III, the No. 3 seed Crusaders will host No. 6 West Lafayette Ridgewood at 6:30 p.m. Monday in its sectional final, with the winner advancing to face either No. 2 Zanesville Bishop Rosecrans or No. 7 Magnolia Sandy Valley in the East District semifinals on Oct. 26.

Also in Division III, Edison is the No. 8 seed and will test No. 1 seed Berlin Hiland in the sectional round at 6:30 p.m. Monday. The winner advances to face either No. 4 Coshocton or No. 5 Cambridge.

BOYS SOCCER

The sectional semifinal round in the Division III, East 1 bracket on the boys side features a battle of local teams as No. 7 Edison will battle No. 6 Catholic Central at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Tony Rencinella Soccer Field. The teams tied 2-2 on Sept. 14.

The winner of that match will face No. 3 West Muksingum at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

In Division II, East 2, Big Red is the No. 11 seed and will travel to Minerva on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in a sectional semifinal. The winner advances to face No. 4 Cambridge on Oct. 23.

In the same bracket, Indian Creek is the No. 12 seed and will travel to No. 9 East Liverpool on Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. for a sectional final.

The winner will face either No. 2 Dover or No. 15 Harrison Central/No. 16 Tri-Valley on Oct. 27.

The Huskies and Tri-Valley square off in Cadiz on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in a sectional semifinal, the winner moving on to face the Tornados.

VOLLEYBALL

On the volleyball court, in Division II, East 1, Indian Creek is the No. 8 seed and will have an OVAC tournament rematch when it hosts No. 9 East Liverpool at 6 p.m. on Oct. 20. The Potters edged the Redskins in four sets in the conference semifinals Tuesday.

The winner of that sectional final advances to see either top seed Tri-Valley or No.15 Minerva/No. 17 Maysville on Oct. 26.

In the same bracket, Big Red is the No. 12 seed and travels to No. 6 Dover on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. for a sectional final.

Should Big Red prevail, it would face the winner of No. 4 River View and No. 13 Indian Valley on Oct. 26.

In Division IV, Catholic Central is the No. 7 seed and will test No. 3 Caldwell on Saturday at noon. If the Crusaders move on, they would face the winner of No. 6 Strasburg-Franklin and No. 14 Malvern on Oct. 23.

In the same bracket, Toronto is the No. 11 seed and will host No. 12 Bishop Rosecrans at 6 p.m. on Oct. 20. The Red Knights, if they move on, would take on either No. 1 Shenandoah or No. 18 Bridgeport/No.15 River on Oct. 23.

Finally, In Division III, Harrison Central is the No. 11 seed and will travel to No. 9 Barnesville on Monday at 6 p.m for a sectional final. The winner will test either No. 1 Tuscarawas Valley or No. 13 Martins Ferry/No. 16 Bellaire on Oct. 23.

Edison is the No. 17 seed in that bracket and takes on No. 15 McConnelsville Morgan in a sectional semifinal on the road Saturday at 11 a.m. The winner advances to face No. 2 Fort Frye on Monday.

Buckeye Local, also in Division III, is the No. 18 seed and will test Berlin Hiland, the No. 5 seed, at 6 p.m. on Monday. The winner of that sectional final faces either No. 3 Coshocton or No. 14 Sandy Valley on Oct. 23.
