Edison girls battle Bobcats, come up short on senior night, 3-0

RICHMOND — The Edison girls’ soccer team put up a fight against Cambridge on senior night.

The Bobcats scored two goals less than five minutes apart in the first half enroute to a 3-0 win against the Wildcats Thursday night at the Edison Unified Sports Complex.

“It was pretty doggone even game,” first-year Edison (0-15) head coach Meghan Scott said. “We played from the start of the game all the way until the last whistle blew. We had a chance to score if they didn’t blow the whistle. We had a lot of shots. I am proud of the girls for setting those up.”

All three Cambridge goals were unassisted.

“I thought we played phenomenal,” Cambridge (3-9-2) head coach Tim Fox said. “We have been working on a lot of things, and they brought that to the game. I was pleased with how we played, especially on defense.”

Kaydence Habbit made six saves in goal for Edison.

Zoey Cahoon, Brynn Eubanks and Jenna Murrey all tallied a goal for Cambridge.

Jenna Young made three saves for the Bobcats.

With a little less than six minutes gone in the match, Edison’s Amelia Collopy fired a shot on goal, and Young made the save. Following the save, Cambridge launched a counterattack, and Cahoon broke through the Edison defense before knocking a shot into the net to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead with 33:52 left in the first half.

Eubanks scored from long range when she lofted a shot over Habbit’s head and into the goal giving the girls from Guernsey County a 2-0 lead with 29:02 remaining to be played before halftime.

“I knew a little bit about them,” Fox said about the Wildcats. “I looked at their results. I knew we weren’t going to come here and just roll over them. I knew we were going to have to do the right things and play well. They have had a pretty-rough year, but they continue to play.”

Edison kept Cambridge off the scoreboard again until Murrey capped the scoring with less than five minutes left in the match.

“We have five graduating seniors,” Scott said. “We are really going to miss them. They definitely have done a lot for the team, but we are definitely looking forward to the future. They have provided great leadership for the younger girls to follow.”

The seniors were honored before the start of the match.

“They really stepped up knowing I was coming in as a first-year coach,” Scott said. “They took over roles. They gave me advice. They gave me great feedback. They provided great leadership for the team. They pushed the other girls.”

The game was the final regular season game for the Wildcats.

Cambridge is slated to play Athens at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at home.

Edison is scheduled to play Hiland at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road in an Ohio Division III Eastern District Sectional Co-Final. Meanwhile, Cambridge is scheduled to play Coshocton at 5 p.m. Tuesday in a sectional co-final. The winner of the Edison game plays the winner of the Cambridge game in the district semifinals Oct. 26 at a site to be determined.

“The girls have come a long way since the start of the season,” Scott said. “The weather has changed, and that has helped us. We started with a team that was unsure of themselves. They were unskilled, but they have really been building those fundamentals up. They have knocked it into gear. We have really played well in our last five games.”
