Beallsville 50, CCHS 44

BEALLSVILLE — Clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch helped Beallsville hold on for a 50-44 victory over Catholic Central Monday.

The Blue Devils, thanks to 10 points by senior standout Makenna Phillips, stormed out to an 18-9 lead after the first quarter and were up, 27-17, at the break.

Central began chipping away at the deficit in the second half and pulled to within one (45-44) with a little more than two minutes to go thanks to a Katie Zatta triple. The Crusaders had several opportunities to take the lead but could not get a shot to fall.

Beallsville put the victory on ice by sinking nine of 10 freebies during the final eight minutes. The hosts went 5 of 6 from the stripe in the last 90 seconds

Phillips took game-scoring honors with 22 points. Hallie Boomer and Cheyenne Riley had 11 apiece for the Blue Devils, who topped the Crusaders 56-28 earlier in the season. Six of Riley’s total came via the 3-pointer.

Zatta paced Central, which fell to 1-6, with 15 points. Senior point guard Morgan Green added eight, six coming during Central’s fourth-quarter rally, while Clara Symington and Theresa Kerker evenly divided 12.

Beallsville posted a 14-12 victory in the two-quarter junior varsity game, which went into overtime. Kiliegh Darby led the Blue Devils with five points. Jackie O’Karma paced Central with four.

The Crusaders are tentatively scheduled to return to action Thursday with a home game against St. Clairsville.
