Higher weights step up for Big Red against Boardman
BOARDMAN — Trailing by 13 points and with just four matches left in a dual Thursday at Boardman, the remaining Steubenville wrestlers just didn’t need to win.
They needed to pin. Big Red accepted the challenge and completed the mission when David Tuttle (182), Keith Bodnar (195), Spencer Ostovich (220) and Peyton Tuttle (heavyweight) all won by falls. The big finish propelled Steubenville to a 45-34 team victory.
Big Red notched the first points of the dual when Anthony Shevlin won via forfeit, but a Boardman pin and two Big Red forfeits put the visitors in a 24-6 hole. Tyler Muldrew took back six of those points with a pin of 3:33 at 138. Aaron Ferguson (145) followed with a 7-0 decision over Sean O’Horo — the No. 15 wrestler in the state at Division I, 145 pounds. Ferguson is ranked 14th in Division II at 145.
Fellow state-ranked Big Red wrestler Ethan Pappas (third at 160 in Division II) also came up with a big pin on the night. He recorded a fall at 1:13. Pappas’ win proved pivotal in keeping Big Red in contention as it was sandwiched between two Boardman pins.
That set up the heavier weights must-pin situation. David Tuttle, who is currently ranked No. 4 at 195 in Division II, did his part in 1:14 as did his brother, Peyton, who matched the pinning time. Ostovich made very quick work of his opponent, registering a fall in 36 seconds, but not as quick as Bodnar, who needed just 13 seconds to record his pin.
Steubenville closes the book on the 2019-20 dual season on Wednesday at Barnesville.
