TORONTO — A week made a big difference for Toronto, as it rebounded for a 19-12 win over Harrison Central on Friday night at Clarke Hinkle Field.

“That’s the highs and lows of high school football,” Toronto head coach Josh Franke said. “It was a lot different (than Week 1).”

The Red Knights (1-1) opened a 19-6 lead late in the third quarter and, after the Huskies (0-2) pulled within a score, came up with a big play on defense to seal the victory as Brendan Matyas picked off a Clayton Nunez pass with 2:17 to go.

Nunez played the second half in place of an injured Kobe Mitchell, who did not see the field in the second half.

He was shaken up on a big hit at the end of a run in the first quarter, but returned until halftime. He had 142 yards through the air and touchdown to that point.

“Any time you lose a player like him, he’s so dynamic, it changes a lot of the game,” Harrison Central head coach Anthony Hayes said.

Caleb Leasure, making his season debut for Toronto, went 7 of 9 passing for 145 and a score, an 84-yard catch-and-run by Zach Stackhouse early in the second quarter to break a 6-6 tie.

Toronto opened the scoring on a 3-yard run by JoJo Savage capping the opening drive.

Harrison Central answered on its first drive late in the opening quarter with a 28-yard Mitchell to Nunez strike.

Tristan Thomas scored from 15 yards out to make it 19-6 Toronto in the closing stages of the third quarter, before Harrison Central’s Tucker Coultrap – who finished with 44 yards on 16 carries – capped a 12-play drive to pull within seven.

Garret Dozier ran for 97 yards on 22 carries to lead Toronto.
