WEIRTON — Madonna got off to a quick start for the first time in four games and bounced back from its first loss with a smooth 34-0 homecoming victory over Mathews Friday night at Jimmy Carey Stadium.

Sophomore quarterback Santino Arlia led the way, completing 28 of 41 passes for 364 yards and all five of Madonna’s touchdowns.

Blue Don coach Darrin Hicks said the coaching staff tweaked some things, and his team executed well in scoring just a minute and a half into the game and putting the ball into the end zone on four of six first half possessions.

“We’re constantly trying to tweak, constantly trying to find new ways to get better,” said Hicks, whose club now is 3-1. “We did change the way we approached our week of practice. We did some different things, especially later in the week. We changed the way we did our pregame today (Friday) and, obviously, some of the things we changed did good things for us.”

The undermanned Mustangs found it difficult to penetrate the Madonna defense. Matthews gained just 93 total yards and had only three first downs.

Madonna passed the ball a total of 42 times in the game, and Hicks said it was because Matthews had a game plan to stop the Blue Don rushing attack by packing six and seven players into the box. He said he went with the idea of “taking what the defense gives us.” That meant Arlia filled the air more than any game so far.

He completed passes to nine different receivers. Brennan Secrist caught three for scores, Mason Thompson had two and Evan Bone and Lucky Pulice had one each. The touchdown reception was a good debut for Pulice who is a new addition to the Madonna roster.

“Santino seemed to be sharp tonight,” Hicks said. “I thought he took what they gave him, which is important in the maturation of a young quarterback. I was pleased with his poise out there. I was pleased with our overall performance.”
