Edison sneaks by Big Red in opener
RICHMOND — The Edison volleyball team opened its season Wednesday with a hard-fought victory over Steubenville, 25-23, 25-22, 18-25, 12-25 and 15-13.
Along with beginning the season 1-0, the Wildcats gave Todd Smith his first victory as head coach.
“It looked like we forgot how to play in the third and fourth sets, but I’m not complaining,” Smith said. “We were able to bounce back.”
Smith also is the boys and girls head track coach and assistant athletic director.
Gracie Phillips finished with four points, two kills and 36 sets for Edison. Grayce Andreozzi had eight points, while Savanna Ankrom recorded four. Corinne Freeman collected five kills. Jadden Vincenzo dug out five balls, and Karissa Speedy added 30 sets.
For Big Red (0-2), it’s still looking for Kristin Taylor’s first victory as head coach. It fell to East Liverpool in its opener on Monday.
Anna Taylor had 20 kills, eight points, four digs and three blocks on Wednesday. Emily Allen contributed 17 points and 27 assists. Makayla Abram had six blocks and five kills, while Sammi Cucarese added 17 digs and five points.
Edison hosts Harrison Central tonight. Big Red returns to action Tuesday at Indian Creek.
In jayvee action, Big Red won in two sets, 26-24 and 25-17.
