MOUNDSVILLE — With the temperatures reaching the 90s, it was a perfect day to take a trip to the pool.

For many area swimmers, they were able to cool off a bit and also put in some hard work at the Marshall County Invitational at Four Seasons Pool.

A trio of St. Clairsville athletes put together strong performances. Kylie McKeegan, Caleb McKeegan and Evan Yost all scored 100 points to help the St. Clairsville Summer Swim team secure the combined team title along with the boys’ title. All three won their age group for high point winners.

St. Clairsville had a total of 2,278 points, with the Martins Ferry Aquatic Club just on its tail (1,841.50), who finished in second.

The St. Clairsville boys had a total of 907 points. Martins Ferry won the overall girls’ title with 954.5 points.

Marshall County rounded out the top three by placing third in the girls (796.5), boys (291) and combined (1,393.50) team scores.

Caleb McKeegan also won five individual events starting with the boys 13-14 50 freestyle (27.63), 200 freestyle (2:12.95), 100 backstroke (1:09.15), 50 butterfly (28.63) and 100 butterfly (1:07.64).

Yost ran away in his age group by capturing the boys 11-12 50 freestyle (29.23), 100 freestyle (1:04.79), 50 backstroke (33.93), 100 backstroke (1:12.95) and 50 butterfly (32.11).

Kylie McKeegan claimed five individual titles including the girls 15-18 freestyle (26.31), 50 backstroke (31.49), 100 backstroke (1:08.67), 50 butterfly (29.02) and 100 butterfly (1:06.10).

St. Clairsville, though, wasn’t alone with athletes hitting the century mark in points,.

A pair of Martins Ferry Aquatic Club members got there too in Anna Norman (girls 13-14) and Brennan Wack (boys 10-11). Norman paced the girls to an overall title with individual victories in the 50 freestyle (28.44), 200 freestyle (2:23.73), 50 backstroke (33.61) and 50 butterfly (30.78).

“I thought we did really good, especially with the weather. It was one of the hottest days of the year,” Martins Ferry coach Nicholas Levi said. “We had to stay hydrated and the kids persevered through some of those. Plus we had some older swimmers come down and swim some of the early events because they had to go to work, which I really appreciate.

“We put a lot of kids in different events. It was the last opportunity to get a time for the championship meet next Saturday. So, we gave them a chance to swim in some events that they didn’t this summer, so we throw a lot of kids in couple different events as well.”

Wack was the first one to hit the wall in the 25 freestyle (15.89), 25 backstroke (21.29), 25 breaststroke (26.39), 25 butterfly (20.13) and 50 freestyle (37.13) for Martins Ferry.

“We found some stuff we can work on,” Levi said about preparing for next week. “We just have to keep plugging away and clean up some things for the championship. It’ll be here before we know it and we’re looking forward to it. The kids had a lot of fun.”

Nathan Yost also was vital in St. Clairsville’s victory. He tied Marshall County’s Alex Postle for the high point award with 94 in the 15-18 age group.

Nathan Yost had the fastest time in the 50 backstroke (29.85), 100 backstroke (1:04.80) and 50 butterfly (27.15). Postle boasted victories in the 50 freestyle (25.18), 100 freestyle (57.15) and 50 breaststroke (32.92).

Marshall County’s Maitlyn Miller was the high point winner for the girls 11-12 age group as she won the 50 freestyle (29.19), 50 backstroke (36.47), 50 breaststroke (42.41) and 50 butterfly (34.79) while Cassidy Yuhas of Blackhawk School District (girls 9-10), Marshall County’s Eliana Gharib (girls 7-8) and St. Clairsville’s Autumn Calvert (6 and under) won their respective age group.

Gharib won multiple individual titles including the 25 butterfly (26.27) and 50 freestyle (58.71).

For the boys, St. Clairsville’s Joshua Perry (7-8) and Martins Ferry’s Logan Giffin (6 and under) were the other high point winners.

Other multiple event winners were Marshall County’s Zara Zervos (girls 15-18). Zervos claimed titles in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.98) and 50 breaststroke (36.69).

Peyson Stupak of St. Clairsville won the girls 8 and under 25 freestyle (18.42), 25 breaststroke (25.03) and 25 backstroke (26.09). Teammate Bryce Lagon (8 and under) won the 25 backstroke (24.96) and 25 breaststroke (30.86).

Thompson Park’s Addison Mobley captured the girls 11-12 100 freestyle (1:11.14) and 200 IM (3:35.07) while Melody Braham (15-18) won the 100 breaststroke (1:25.61) and 200 IM (2:56.20).

St. Clairsville’s coach Kate Banks was unavailable after the meet for an interview.
