Racquet club opening soon

EAST LIVERPOOL — The Ohio Valley Racquet Club will open its doors on Sept. 1 in East Liverpool. The new club occupies the space that previously housed the Tri-State Tennis Club.

New owners Rick and Tammi Brown are very excited to bring this indoor tennis opportunity to the Tri-State Area. Many upgrades have been made to the club, including new LED lighting throughout the club, improved ceilings, a secure and improved entrance and sound-absorbing wall covering. An additional seating area has been added to the club.

Plans are under way to bring league play to the club. Opportunities will be available for high school and adult leagues. Tennis lessons and junior clinics also will be held at the tennis club.

Expansion hopefuls meet with brass

NEW YORK — The ownership group hoping to land a Major League Soccer expansion franchise for St. Louis has made a formal presentation to league officials.

Representatives from an expansion bid in Charlotte backed by billionaire David Tepper also met with officials Monday in New York to provide an update, the league says.

Groups from Sacramento and Las Vegas also are competing for three likely expansion franchises in MLS, which plans to grow to 30 teams.

The league currently has 24 teams. Inter Miami and Nashville begin play next season, and Austin arrives in 2021.

The Sacramento group, backed by billionaire Ron Burkle, also will meet with the league soon.

Representatives from every potential expansion ownership group will attend the league’s All-Star week in Orlando this month.

NBA MVP gives baseball a shot

NEW YORK — In hoops, Giannis Antetokounmpo is court royalty. But in baseball, he’s a complete rookie.

In fact, the 24-year-old from Greece said he’d never even touched a baseball before he did so Monday night at Yankee Stadium.

The reigning NBA MVP was shocked.

“It was really heavy,” Antetokounmpo told The Associated Press. “I thought it would be lighter.”

The Milwaukee Bucks star went on to take a few swings in the batting cage beneath the stands before the Yankees faced the Tampa Bay Rays. The 6-foot-11 Antetokounmpo got some coaching, with limited results — he swung and missed once with the ball on a tee, and made light contact on two other tries.

“I would be a terrible baseball player,” he said.

The “Greek Freak” was in the Bronx with his three brothers to promote his new signature sneaker and signed a pair for a fan — Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia.

Antetokounmpo watched the Yankees take batting practice, which reinforced his notion that he wasn’t destined for the diamond.

“I saw Aaron Judge hitting the ball into the stands. That’s amazing. You’ve got to be really strong to do that,” he said.

Royals will extend netting

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals are planning to extend the netting at Kauffman Stadium to better protect fans.

The decision comes after a young fan was struck by a hard-hit foul ball Sunday during the Royals’ game against the Detroit Tigers.

Spokesman Toby Cook told KSHB-TV the girl was kept at a hospital overnight for observation and expected to be released Monday.

Following recommendations from Major League Baseball, the Royals in 2016 extended the netting from the outside edges of the dugouts and raised it behind home plate about 8 feet.
