Ohio football regional alignments set
COLUMBUS — One week after the Ohio High School Athletic Association announced the divisional alignment for the 2019 football season, teams found out what region they will compete in for a spot come playoff time.
Big Red, which moved from Division IV to Division III, will compete in Region 9. Other teams in the region are Aurora, Akron Buchtel, Canfield, Chaney, Chardon, Coventry, Dover, Youngstown East, Akron East, Geneva, Painesville Harvey, Warren Howland, Chargrin Falls Louisville, Alliance Marlington, New Philadelphia, Niles McKinley, Chardon Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, Ravenna, Akron Springfield, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, Streetsboro, Tallmadge, Hunting Valley University School, Beloit West Branch and Peninsula Woodridge.
Indian Creek stays in Division IV, Region 13. New teams in the region are Cleveland Central Catholic, Navarre Fairless, Gates Mills Hawken, Cleveland JFK, Mentor Lake Catholic and Warrensville Heights.
In Division V, Harrison Central — which had been in Division IV — moves to Region 17, along with Edison and Buckeye Local. Also in the region are Barnesville, Bellaire, Burton Berkshire, Canton Central Catholic, Warren Champion, Conneaut, Columbiana Crestview, Mantua Crestwood, Sugercreek Garaway, Garetttsville Garfield, Gates Mills Gilmour Academy, Orwell Grand Valley, Jefferson Area, Kirtland, Akron Manchester, Martins Ferry, Rootstown, Magnolia Sandy Valley, Canfield South Range, Ravenna Southeast, Massillon Tuslaw, Atwater Waterloo and Wickliffe.
In Division VII, two local teams will compete in the same region with Catholic Central’s move from Division VI to Division VII, Region 25 with Toronto. Also in the Region are Southington Chalker, Bowerston Connotton Valley, Cuyahoga Heights, Danville, Lisbon, Fairport Harding, Independence, North Jackson Jackson-Milton, Warren JFK, Leetonia, Lowellville, Lucas, Malvern, Vienna Matthews, McDonald, Newbury, Richmond Heights, Sebring McKinley, Richmond Heights, Greenwich South Central, Ashtabula St. John School, Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas, Strasburg-Franklin, Tuscarawas Central Catholic, Youngstown Valley Christian, Wellsville and Windham.
Also announced on Thursday, Big Red and Indian Creek’s boys and girls soccer teams will compete in Division II during the 2019 fall season, while the boys and girls teams for Catholic Central, Edison and Harrison Central will compete in Division III.
In volleyball, Big Red and Indian Creek will compete in Division II in 2019. Edsion, Harrison Central and Buckeye Local will compete in Division III, while Catholic Central and Toronto will compete in Division IV.
Also announced on Thursday was the division alignments for the 2019-20 basketball season.
The boys and girls teams for Big Red and Indian Creek will compete in Division II. Edison, Harrison Central and Buckeye Local’s boys and girls teams will compete in Division III. The Catholic Central and Toronto boys and girls stay put in Division IV.
