CAMBRIDGE — Seedings and pairings for the 2019 Ohio Eastern District girls basketball tournament were announced Sunday.

Indian Creek earned the second seed in Division II. Steve Eft and his state-ranked Redskins will open tournament play on Feb. 20 with a home game against 13th-seeded Philo. The tip is set for 7 p.m. Should Creek advance, it will host either Minerva, the fourth seed, or eight-seeded John Glenn on Feb. 23 at 2 p.m.

Eft’s club will begin its quest for an OVAC Class 5A championship today when it welcomes third-seeded John Marshall.

Big Red is the 10th-seeded Division II team and will visit seventh-seeded St. Clairsville on Feb. 20. That winner will face either Indian Valley, the 11th seed, or sixth-seeded River View on Feb. 23.

Unbeaten New Philadelphia, which advanced to the state semifinals last season, is the top seed in Division II.

Catholic Central landed the sixth seed in Division IV. The Crusaders will host 12th-seeded Caldwell on Feb. 21. That winner will play either top-seeded Shadyside or 16th-seeded Malvern on Feb. 23.

Like Indian Creek, Central also qualified for the OVAC final four. For the third-consecutive year, the Crusaders will face River in the semifinals. Today’s game will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Hannibal. Central is third in the Class 2A field, while River finished second.

Toronto is the 11th Division IV seed and will visit No. 10 Strasburg on Feb. 21. That winner will have a Feb. 23 date with either second-seeded River or Frontier, the 14th seed, on Feb. 23.

Buckeye Local is seeded 10th in Division III’s East District 1. The Panthers are matched with No. 8 Union Local on Feb. 23.

Buckeye also made the OVAC tournament and will play at Beaver Local today in the Class 4A semifinals. The Panthers finished third and the Beavers second.

The 11th seed in Division III is Harrison Central. The Huskies will play on Feb. 23 against either fourth-seeded Sandy Valley or No. 15 West Muskingum.

Edison was placed in the East 2 District. The 17th-seeded Wildcats drew a tough opening assignment and will visit second-seeded Bellaire on Feb. 20.

Berlin Hiland is the top seed in Division III.

It also was announced Sunday that the Ohio High School Athletic Association will again use a “mercy rule” during tournament play this year.

Any time a score differential reaches 35 points during the second half, a running clock will be utilized. The clock only will stop for timeouts or injuries. Should the score drop below 30 points, the clock will revert to regular timing.
