Crawford rushes for 300 yards in Big Red’s victory

NEW PHILADELPHIA — The Tuscarawas County sweep is complete.

Steubenville used the big play, along with a relentless ground attack to outlast New Philadelphia, 56-39, Friday inside a jam-packed Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium.

“I am very happy with the way our team played throughout the game,” Big Red head coach Reno Saccoccia said. “It was a good team win all the way around.”

The victory was the sixth straight for Reno Saccoccia’s state-ranked club, following its season-opening loss to Penn Hills. The Division III Quakers fall to 3-4. The all-time series between the schools now is tied at 5-5-1.

Both offenses finished with huge numbers. Big Red, which knocked off Dover a week ago, finished with 680 yards (595 coming on the ground). Meanwhile, the Quakers rolled to 412, 317 coming via the arm of junior quarterback Baron May.

“Offensively, we took advantage of the opportunities we had,” Saccoccia said. “Defensively, I was happy with a couple of opportunities it presented for the offense. The offensive line continues to show improvement. All in all, it was a good team win.

Five of Big Red’s touchdowns came on plays of 45 yards or more. Tayveon Crawford, who finished with a career-high 300 yards, had touchdown runs of 46 and 75 yards. Jaziah Blackwell sprinted 68 yards to pay dirt, and Erik Lulla traveled 63 yards after grabbing a Clayton Criss pass. Lucas Zorne found the end zone for the first time this season on a 66-yard sprint.

Big Red led 36-18 after a high-octane first half that saw the two teams combine for 643 yards.

May threw for six touchdowns, three for Jent Joseph and the other three to Sam Zemis. Joseph’s second six-pointer came thanks to a sensational diving catch.

Crawford got his yardage on 24 carries. Blackwell finished with 122 on seven trips.

Joseph had seven catches to lead New Philadelphia for 151 yards. Zemis hauled in six, good for 115 yards. May was picked off twice by Big Red’s Dylan Cunningham.

Kwadre Williams, Gaige Francis, Joe Brown and Ryan Rauch all recorded two-point conversions for Big Red.

Steubenville will return to Harding Stadium next Friday, hosting Erie, Pa.

“We continue to improve and work hard as we go into next week,” Saccoccia said.
