OVAC week for local soccer teams

The annual Ohio Valley Athletic Conference soccer championships will begin today and continue through the finals on Saturday. The boys and girls fields are broken down to the top four teams in each Class 1A-3A, Class 4A and Class 5A.

Semifinal matches will take place today, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the higher-seeded team’s home field. All matches have 5 p.m. starts.

The boys championship finals will be contested at Wheeling Island Stadium at 10 a.m. (5A), noon (1A-3A) and 2 p.m (4A). The girls finals will be held at Red Devil Stadium in St. Clairsville, with the Class 4A beginning the day at 10 a.m. Class 5A is set for noon and Class 1A-3A at 2 p.m.

On the boys side, Steubenville Catholic (1A-3A), Steubenville (4A) and Wheeling Park (5A) are the defending champions.

The top-seeded Crusaders will be seeking their fourth- consecutive title. They have captured six of the last seven championships since the format change from divisions to classes and will host fourth-seeded Caldwell on Monday. The other semifinal pits No. 2 Linsly against No. 3 Wheeling Central, also on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in East Wheeling.

In Class 5A, Big Red is the fourth seed and will trek to Morgantown to meet No. 1 University on Tuesday. A night later, No. 2 Wheeling Park hosts third-seeded Indian Creek.

In Class 4A, top-seeded Beaver Local entertains No. 4 Oak Glen today.

Second-seeded East Liverpool welcomes No. 3 Harrison Central on Wednesday.

In girls action, Wheeling Central (Class 1A-3A), Oak Glen (4A) and Wheeling Park (5A) are the defending champs. However, the Patriots failed to make this year’s event.

The top-seeded Maroon Knights host No. 4 Steubenville Catholic on Tuesday before No. 3 Madonna travels to second-seeded Linsly on Thursday.

In Class 4A, the No. 1 Golden Bears welcome fourth-seeded Harrison Central on Tuesday, with No. 2 St. Clairsville hosting third-seeded Beaver Local on Thursday in a rematch of their Buckeye 8 championship match last week won by the Red Devils, 1-0.

In Class 5A, a new titlist is assured as Parkersburg South earned the No. 1 seed and will host fourth-seeded Indian Creek on Tuesday. University, the second seed, entertains third-seeded Morgantown on Thursday.
